Smells like citronella.
Cory
I love the fact that it's natural, that it smells really nice, and that it seems to keep the bugs away (which is obviously the point!).

I used to work with horses in Minnesota in the summer. I've used every bug repellant I've ever heard of, from the most benign to the most toxic, and to be perfectly honest, the toxic ones always worked better.

But I didn't want to spray them on my son, so I bought this stuff. I checked out the corporate citizen ratings on California Baby, and they're good enough that I felt confident that their labeling and promotional materials were accurate. Which is why I didn't expect it to work very well. I thought it would be better than nothing and would cause me the least worry about my son's health, but, having been chewed alive while sitting in a citronella fog, I really expected my son to have bites at the end of our camping trip in the Green Mountains.

He didn't, and neither did I. We were quite liberal with reapplication, but the ingredients are nontoxic, so it's okay to reapply. The mist is really fine, so even after spraying both of us down pretty frequently, the bottle is hardly touched. I was totally stunned by how well it worked.

We live in South Florida where it is hot, humid and wet most of the year. We have a serious mosquito population.

I have purchased several natural brands of mosquito repellant over the past couple of years and wanted to share my experience with them.

My least favorite is California Baby California Baby Bug Repellant Spray, 6.5 Ounce. The California Baby repellant simply doesn't work, even if I use a lot (spray enough that the skin is wet). There is no change in mosquito behavior with this product, they just keep coming, landing and biting.

Next is Buzzaway Quantum Buzzaway, Extreme Spray, 4-Ounce It works well, but is soy based and not recommended for small children. I will spray this on myself and my little one's clothing (which is enough to keep the skeeters away), but not on his skin.

Bite Blocker is my favorite of the three Bite Blocker Xtreme 6.70 Ounces Works better than the previous two and is again all natural. Still, I don't spray this on the baby's skin, I spritz his clothing and shoes and the mosquitoes stay away.

Thanks for reading, I hope this review was helpful!

We live in the deep, swampy Southeastern US. Going outdoors here is likely to draw a virtual cloud of mosquito activity within seconds. It's nearly impossible to escape.

We first tried Badger Balm, a repellent with similar ingredients but that was, even immediately after having been applied, totally ineffective.

Still wanting to avoid DEET-containing repellents, I opted to try California Baby's Bug Repellent. It does work, but with a couple caveats. One is that you must VERY liberally apply it, and if you've missed a spot the mosquitoes will find it. But once we did manage to get every square inch of exposed skin, the mosquitoes turned tail and ran. But they didn't go far. As you sweat (and in 100+ weather, you will sweat) the stuff seems to become diluted. So reapplication is necessary roughly every 15-20 minutes. Fortunately, the every-square-inch method didn't seem to be as crucial for successive applications... which made it somewhat less a hassle. And I suppose all-in-all it's a reasonable trade-off to the unsavory alternative: Be eaten alive. As an aside I've read elsewhere that reapplication is necessary with any non-DEET product, and that the average time before non-DEET repellents wear off is about 20 minutes. In other words, I don't think we'll find anything that works better, considering our no-DEET rule.

Two other points in favor of this Bug Repellent are the Skin Deep Rating: 0 hazard. Which is beyond fantastic. Apply and reapply without worrying about hideous long-term health effects. And the second point in its favor is that the smell is actually milder than some other all-natural sprays, I dare say it's even pleasant.

I'll definitely be buying more of this, even at the steep cost. Fortunately we can find it locally, because buying it online plus shipping would just make it unaffordable.

We've been using this for a couple months while hiking in the woods in TN. My toddler has been getting eaten alive and even got a tick. Looking for something better.

We used a full bottle of California Baby's Bug Repellent to keep the mosquitos at bay this Summer. I bought a new bottle and my son broke out in an angry red rash.
I compared the ingredients. Apparently they added soap bark and lethicin to the new formulation.

One of the better bug repellents out there and rates well on the 'skin deep' cosmetic database and the safe mama blog. Good for everyday use when needed and has worked well for us so far.

However, Amazon is ripping you off with the price. I bought this on sale at Target for under $10...regular price $11-12 at Target. Amazon is listing this for $18.

Update... My star rating has nothing to do with the seller or price. As the peoduct was a recent purchase, we were still trying it but. Hopeful. I have a respect for eo and chemical free products. Three star means great, but I havnt compared it to other brands to see if it was a fabulous 5 star.... .
