I climb mountains, so my skin gets the maximum possible exposure to the sun (direct, high altitudes = less atmospheric protection, and reflection off the snow from below). I purchased this and three other highly rated sunscreens. The others are zinc or titanium oxide based. All do a fairly good job of protecting my skin.

The big difference, and why this one wins out over the others is the smoothness of application. The others are rather 'stiff', and require a fair bit of working in to get good coverage and no white spots. I always end up coming home with a spot or two that got missed (elbows, back of the arm, etc) and are bright pink. Not to mention the white stains on my shirts. With this sunscreen, it goes on smoothly, lasts the 3-5 hours between applications (may last longer, but I don't even try), and I don't have sensitive pink spots in out of the way places.

I got this product because it's one of the super safe sunscreens recommended by the environmental working group. It's great, but if you sweat a lot it does sting your eyes a little bit. I also got Badger sunscreen at the same time, and it was equally good but did not sting my eyes, so I recommend badger sunscreen over this one.

My toddler son has extremely sensitive skin and Coppertone Waterbabies made him break out in hives upon the first application of the summer :( A little online research sent me looking for California Baby and I ordered it from Amazon. It works great, provides great sun protection, is made of natural products, and absolutely no allergic reaction at all. The price is the downside of this product - $22 for such a small tube! But better than the $30 Target charges and I need the good stuff to protect my baby's skin.

This stuff REALLY works well. I have extremely fair skin and I spent four hours at the beach (half the time in the water) and didn't get a burn anywhere. It goes on white at first, and you have to really rub it in, but I kind of like being able to see it a little bit on the surface of my skin, because I know it's protecting me and I burn so easily. It will get all over your black swimsuit, and the car, and the everything that's dark in color. I think that's pretty much unavoidable with these types of natural sunscreens (the zinc and titanium don't absorb into your skin like the chemical sunscreens - which is why we've been using the chemical ones for years, not knowing the dangerous chemicals involved). It will also take some scrubbing with a pouf or washcloth to get it off. I took a shower after coming back from the beach, and noticed after scrubbing once, there was still white stuff on me. Oh well, it's worth it to not get sunburnt. I find the Alba Botanica Mineral Sunblock, Fragrance Free SPF 30, 4 Ounce Tube rubs in a little bit easier and doesn't leave quite so much of a whitish cast; I also find it easier to get off in the shower.

If you do not have white skin - ie black or brown skin, it will make you zombie-ashy. You might want to try the Alba instead.

this is the only sunscreen lotion that i have tried that doesnt feel like it's caked on your skin.
it's gentle on the skin and doesn't irritate sensitive skin (including skin with psoriasis)

We spent a week in the blazing sun at the beach and my fair skinned children didn't even blush thanks to this lotion. It is thick but easy to apply all over their little selves. They had a slight whitish tinge to their skin until it absorbed. However, they played in the full sun and water for several hours everyday and did not burn in the least. In fact, they both came home with tans.
This company was one of just a few that passed the Environmental World Groups study of sunblocks. It is completely safe for children. The company has also signed the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics" so you can feel very good about buying their products.
The lotion (not the unscented) has a lovely, citrusy aroma that we all liked, too.

My baby was going to be under 6 months during the hot, sunny summer months. I bought this sunscreen for her and found that it was gentle and effective. I could reapply it as needed and she was fine.
It goes on pretty thick and white so you can really make sure you're spreading it everywhere you want to. However, I did find a little goes a long way or else it's too thick and you can't get it all rubbed in.
Even after a beach vacation, she didn't get a ray of sun.
