This review is from: California: A Bicentennial History (Hardcover)
This volume is part of the bicentennial States and the Nation series, published in 1976 (each state had its own book). The emphasis is on the Gold Rush, railroads, and modern times. Lavender is rather critical of the state in recent times, but doesn't try to get at the character of the state. (Perhaps it's too varied for that.) Someone interested in a quick overview of the state might find this book useful, but it's not essential reading. Lavender has done much better work elsewhere.
