Not what I was looking for,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: California Colleges (College Prowler) (College Prowler: California Colleges) (Paperback)
First of all, I did not notice this is a 2006 book so its a bit outdated. Then when I started looking through it, I noticed it only has 24 colleges in it. I thought it would at least have all the CSU schools but it only has 2 of them. That is where this book is terrible. If I knew I was only gonna get 24 schools, I would have just went with the Fiske Guide to Colleges.
The only thing that is good about this book, it does go into some detail to those select 24 schools. Other than that, the book isn't worth it.

I have bought a lot of different books to help me to choose the right college for me. This book is so helpful, it has one of the main things I was looking for in a college guide: the most popular majors (which can tell you if the college specializes in the field you want to go into). It's very clear and tells you about almost everything you want to know from restaurants in the area to parking to housing to drug problems.

College Prowler a Bust,
This review is from: California Colleges (College Prowler) (College Prowler: California Colleges) (Paperback)
Hated it, returned it almost immediately.
Not helpful whatsoever. We found it to be beyond useless when looking for info about colleges, frankly.

It's ok,

I was hoping to find the different majors and programs that each of the schools have in this book, but was really disappointed. All it has is whether a school has good parking, good looking guys and girls or good food. The only interesting part is the community the school is located in. Otherwise it was a letdown.

Overall Good Guide,

While there were some simple errors and some confusing statements from the contributing students, this book was very well written and helpful overall. It gives you an inside look (mostly from students) into the college's Greek life, drug scene, campus and off-campus housing, among other things. If you're looking for a general overview of the many California colleges, this is a great book to accomplish that.

Lifes' decisions made easy,

I was thoroughly impressed with CollegeProwlers California Colleges Compilation guidebook. Three of my top four schools are in Cali, although I'm from the East Coast, so finding info on them was kinda tough ... After looking through several other sources, including school pamphlets, web sites, and the ridiculously boring and overdrawn Fisks' Guides, I stumbled upon the CollegeProwler Cali Compilation. This guide covers dozens of Cali schools including all of the UC schools, LA Universities, The Scripps Colleges, and most importantly, my three schools of interest. It was through this guide--packed with hundreds of actual student quotes from each school--that I finally found the closure needed to accurately narrow down my options and make my decision as to where I want to spend the next 4-5 years of my life. This guide goes on to discuss many delicate topics, such as Campus Food, Nightlife, Campus policies on drinking, and even the hotness levels of the guys & girls on each campus!!! I truly cannot say enough about this book.

Everyone knows that "Josh" obviously works for one of the following competitors to College Prowler:
1. Princeton Review 2. US News 3. The Fiske Guide These corporate giants can't handle students taking over the college guidebook industry.

California .... No Doubt About It!,

This review is from: California Colleges (College Prowler) (College Prowler: California Colleges) (Paperback)
After reading this guidebook, I am definitely going to school in California. I'm from NY, and my parents want me to go to an Ivy League school ... either Cornell or Dartmouth, but I'm DYING to go to either USC, UCLA, Berkeley, or hopefully, Stanford.
After reading this guidebook though, I felt like I spent 4 years on each campus ... each school is covered in dept, around 40 different schools in Cali, and it's really easy to read. I get good grades, but I'm not much of a reader ... but the way this book is laid out is so incredibly easy to read, that anyone can breeze through the book and fall in love with any college in California. Be warned though, they talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly in this guide. For example, USC is not in the safest part of town ... but if you're from NY, like me, you'll be OK. I'm more interested in what the student body is going to be like then some dumb US news ranking ... after all, I'm most likely going to meet my life long friends at college, including my wife! I don't want her to be some uptight Ivy nerd ... I want a nice cinnamoned tan californian! Thanks to College Prowler's Calfornia Colleges, I have seen the light!

Don't trust College Prowler,
By
This review is from: California Colleges (College Prowler) (College Prowler: California Colleges) (Paperback)
When I met with my academic advisor to discuss the college guide books I had been reading, she warned me that College Prowler is considered a reputable source of information by neither her nor any of her colleagues in academe.
Sure enough, when I came to Amazon just now to sell my two used College Prowler books, I noticed that shortly after each book had been published, a single person had submitted a five-star review for both books. In one review, he stated he's "from the East Coast," and in the other review he stated he's "from the Pacific Northwest." It looks like my academic advisor was correct about College Prowler. |
