About the Author

About the Author Cheryl Farr Leas began exploring California more than 15 years ago as a resident of Los Angeles, where she married the man of her dreams in a sushi bar with a view (see Yamashiro in Chapter 21). When she's not traveling the Golden State to visit friends and family — or just to bask in some high-quality California sunshine — she calls Brooklyn, New York, home. She also writes the Frommer's New York City travel guides, is author of Hawaii For Dummies (new in late 2000), and contributes to such publications as Continental Airlines' in-flight magazine, Daily Variety, and Frommer's USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great travel guide for a vacation to California, October 30, 2002
By A Customer
Going to a place for the first time like California, we felt innundated by choices of where to go and what to do. This guide provided everything we needed...from tips on getting around to the best places to stay and eat. It didn't dumb down and really sent us to the perfect places.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must if you are vacationing in California!, June 10, 2008
By
I purchased this book and read it cover to cover before my recent trip to California. I can't express enough how helpful it was. Everything just made sense. I felt like I knew a lot about the state before I even went there and when I was there it all clicked. We even tried a couple of hotel recommendations with great success. (The Fogcatcher Inn in Cambria, near Hearst Castle was wonderful). This book is for someone planning to VACATION in California. The places that are not tourist worthy are not mentioned and they tell you that from the get go. Trust me, the vacation destinations are all here and written about in great easy to read detail. You will be glad you bought this book before your trip.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good not bad!, July 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book gives a list of hotels and restaurants and tips related to weather and means of transport. It was outdated in regard to prices & some addresses. Also it had a list of attractions but not enough details. Also it misses some of the nicer areas to visit. however if you want a basic idea about where to go, it emphasizes the best attractions. Note that it includes no pictures, also very bulky to carry around
