This handy book allows the traveler to look up the California State Historical marker number and read all about the markers one passes on the road. If you don't have time to stop, you can read about what you missed. If you want to plan a trip to an area and visit the historical landmarks in a certain region (like the Gold Country), this book is an excellent resource.

My copy of this book is well worn. Each marker entry provides the exact text from the marker, and instructions/directions on how to find it. However, some of the directions are confusing, and in a few cases, I was unable to find the marker. It's organized by County, with a marker number cross reference in the back. By each entry, I write the date I visited the marker, and sometimes, when I visit it a second time, I write that date down too (as well as who was with me during the visit). I started out just visiting the marker - but now, I photograph it too. It's interesting to compare recent photos to the photos the author provides for some of the markers.

Great book! California has a long history
And this book gets you to the places it
Happened. Lived in Los Angeles all my
Life and didn't know the Mexican American war treaty was signed at an adobe house in the middle of Glendale.
That's just one of over 1100 historical facts.

This is a fun book to keep in your car. But it's time for an update that includes GPS coordinates. I also own a similar book 'Discover Historic California' by George & Jan Roberts
