I was happy to find this dvd on Amazon and see that others remember Jock in many different roles other than the ones that made him well known. I'm grateful that they make their mementos available to us/others, especially at prices that could make a whole library afforable. I continue to be frustrated and disappointed in the graininess and loss of detail in these old black and white movies, but maybe this something is better than no thing. (I would love to see again Jock's fabulous smile, sharp and handsome.) Some are better than others, color, even from the same vintage, is much clearer. Wish someone could "fix" them for maximum enjoyment. I never know if I'm getting the best copy available. But for now I just have to squint a little at fuzzies and shadows. He's still worth a satisfying glimpse of any kind. Marion

Jock Mahoney is one of the great unknown Western icons. As a reluctant hero in this flick, Mahoney follows a somewhat predictable story line of overcoming the evil Mexican invaders while winning the heart of the fair señorita.... As a long-time Yancy Derringer and Range Rider fan, this movie is a fun excursion into a full-length Jock Mahoney experience--without the sex and violence of so many other choices. Great Fun!

Seriously, this has to be one of old Hollywood's biggest historical travesties adapted to the horse opera genre I have ever seen. There is one fact they adhere to and that it is set in California. Not much else has any relevance or accuracy history-wise. That includes costumes, sets, actions, and animals. It becomes a wild west shoot-em up within minutes of a Mexican army - 300 strong! - marches across California, pillaging and burning the poor ranchers and farmers, setting their western towns on fire, and being as despicable as the propaganda-narrator intones...

Purportedly set in 1842, the townsfolk are still dressed in cowboy movie gear and the towns look like Dodge City with hotel balconies and saloons. I give it two stars just because it's so ridiculous it's funny and for a rare Jock Mahoney appearance.

Always enjoy Jock Mahoney westerns, though this one is , in my opinion not his best. Good print though.
