Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6--Following a succinct introduction to Spain's interest in colonizing and spreading Christianity in Upper or Alta California, Van Steenwyk gives an overview of the founding of the chain of 21 coastal missions from Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769 to Mission San Francisco Solano in 1823. She describes the function and workings of these facilities, their secularization, and eventual restoration. She briefly mentions the fact that while some people considered this way of life beneficial to the Indians, others thought it to be a form of slavery. This attractive title, with its numerous black-and-white and full-color photos and reproductions, offers a good introduction to the topic. Students seeking detailed information on particular missions for reports will need to turn elsewhere; they will find the list for further reading and addresses useful.
