This book was extremely informative about the life of the
California Quail. It was easy to read and at times had more
detail than I was interested in--but, overall it is a great
reference work for anyone interested in birdwatching. I never
knew that quail had such interesting lives until I read this
delightful book.

Good info on the various quail to be found in the California area. Touches on the different types with emphisis on the "CA valley quail" which was what I wanted so I was pleased. I was hoping for a bit more on raising them in captivity but none the less a good investment.

Living on the central coast of California we began watching the Quail that roam our area and wondered about all their habits. Found this used book that offered a really complete background on quail and decided to get it. This is not a "picture-book" child's storybook, but the result of much research by various scholars over many years. Somehow, they really make it an interesting book to read and I found that I skipped over very little of the academic stuff. One of the chapters lists all the various sounds/calls the quail make and now we can identify what they are saying. The whole life cycle is laid out, what their habits are in mating and raising the young chick, what natural habitat they need to keep happy and producing. This book tells it all and we would highly recommend it if you want to know more about this beautiful bird.
