This was originally published in 1962 as part of the American Trails Series, and is the story of the main wagon route to California which the Bartleson Party attempted but failed to open in 1841. Chiles and Walker failed in 1843. Only in 1844 did the courageous and efficient Stevens Party manage to take wagons across the cliffs of the Sierra Nevada into California. Even after that the going was hard, as the disasters of 1846, including that of the Donner Party, make clear. But by 1857 a total of 165,000 people and perhaps a million animals had crossed. 8 inches tall, 339 pages, index.
