Book Description

September 30, 2003
"California's Arab Americans" provides sketches of a cross-section of Arab American families in California — both early and later arrivals. The first five chapters summarize geographical, sociological, and historical facts about the Arab world—providing an understanding about why and when immigration occurred. The remaining ten chapters containing the family histories correspond to the typical regional divisions of California, starting on the north coast and concluding in San Diego County. Over 50 family photographs enhance the stories. Sidebars placed throughout the book provide more detailed information about topics such as Arabic writing and names; clarification about who the Syrians, Palestinians, and Arab Afghans are; the basic tenets of Islam and Islamic fundamentalism; Arab American organizations; well-known Arab Americans; and the characteristics of Arab cuisine, dress, and family structure. One sidebar discusses the early and current involvement of Arab Americans in the film industry, especially in the ownership of theater chains.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...we now have the opportunity to meet California’s pioneers of Arab descent as they pursued their California dream. -- Dr. Kevin Starr, California State Librarian

A book for Arab Americans who have forgotten their roots and all Americans who seek an alternative to media stereotyping. -- Dr. Metwalli Amer, CSUS Professor Emeritus, Dir., Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims

An important resource in the effort to bring about understanding, respect, and trust among Americans. -- Rev. Dexter McNamara, Exec. Dir., Interfaith Service Bureau, Sacramento

From the Publisher

Confused by information and misinformation about Arab Americans? This ethnic group has been a neglected part of American history, and particularly California history. Janice Marschner contacted descendants of some of the state's earliest arrivals from Syria and Lebanon and recounts their families' stories of starting out in California as peddlers, merchants, and entrepreneurs in the developing state in the 1890s/early 1900s. Later arrivals are included throughout the book, as well.

More About the Author

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area (Walnut Creek) and have lived in Sacramento since 1973, with a short hiatus in Yreka'20 miles south of the California/Oregon border'to try small town living with my husband and two young children. My parents grew up in Eugene, Oregon, and I spent many summers visiting my grandmother in Eugene.

I graduated from the University of California, Davis, in international relations and earned a master's degree in public policy and administration at California State University,
Sacramento. Before retiring early to pursue my interest in regional history and writing, I worked for a state senator from San Francisco and as a legislative analyst for the State of California.

My first book, 'California 1850: A Snapshot in Time', commemorated California's sesquicentennial in 2000. My second book, 'California's Arab Americans', documented the contributions of California's early pioneers from the Arab world. Since my first book has continued to be popular over its eight-year life, I decided Oregon deserved to have a similar one to commemorate its sesquicentennial in 2009'especially since my late parents were native Oregonians. On my 2008 book tour, I hope to stir up enthusiasm about Oregon's upcoming historic year (see http://www.oregon150.org/ and I plan to return to Oregon in 2009 to join in on the festivities'if travel costs are not too prohibitive. My schedule appears on my author page of my publisher's website: http://www.timberpress.com.

If you attend any of my events, please introduce yourself. I always love meeting new people and I am especially interested in chatting with people who are descendants of Oregon pioneers or California transplants. By the way, I will have some copies of my two earlier books with me, so if you're interested in one of them, please let me know and I'll sign them for you.

Many of you know that I published my first two books myself and served as president of my local publisher's association'always trying to help other authors learn how to best market their books through the programs our association offered. With 'Oregon 1859' I had an entirely new learning experience of having it published by Timber Press in Portland, Oregon. All of the staff have been wonderful to work with and I am extremely proud of the final product.

5.0 out of 5 stars California pot-au-feu, then and now., April 23, 2004

Janice Marschner is my California Harry Potter author; I can't wait for the next volume to hit the book racks. Her "California 1850" is a seminal reference book on every county in our state in its puberty. It made me realize what younsters we are compared to 'the old countires' of our parents' origins. Anecdotes make it encouragingly readable. I feel it should be in every Califonira home, library, school, and on historical society bookshelves.

"California's Arab Americans" is volume one of a series she plans on the minorities that spice our Calfornia stew. The fact that there are several pages on my colorful maternal MALOUF family who pulled into Los Angeles in 1890, might make me appear somewhat prejudiced. The background chapters on immigrations, customs and ethnic individuality should be of common interest. It might help to help improve the status of ethnic minorities in times of suspicion, fear and hatred.

I, for one, am anxious to learn more about the Basques, Slavs, Orientals, etc. who are distributed thruout our State, some still with regional enclaves which perpetuate language, cuisine, religion, and festivals. Homogeneity is drab and tasteless; vive la difference!

Janice is a unique researcher and raconteuse. Brava! Encore!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Slice of Life, February 16, 2004

This review is from: California's Arab Americans (Library Binding)
A slice of our everyday lives you may have missed --- Arab Americans immigrated to California like many others. They are hard workers, family oriented and caring individuals. If you don't believe that, please read Janice Marschner's "California's Arab Americans." Her thumbnail snaphot of their difficult war-ridden history is a good refresher for the reader and makes their integration into American society, as put forth by Marschner, seem that much more remarkable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The People Next Door, February 15, 2004
This review is from: California's Arab Americans (Library Binding)
This book does a great job communicating an important truth: Arab Americans are the people right next door. They are the owners of many landmark businesses in California towns. They are among the familar faces in our community as council members, board members, state representatives and participants in the movie industry. Janice Marschner has structured the book so that the information is easy to access and the sideboards, with topics like Arabic Writing and Names, Arab Cuisine and Key Issues of Conflict in Arab World, make obtaining that information even more convenient. This book will be appreciated by teachers and others interested in knowing more about the people of California.
