2.0 out of 5 stars Alphabetical Treatment, August 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While detailed for the alphabetical treatment of place names, history and other information behind the names is lacking. Yes, this brings several place names of several counties together, confirms the location of a place, but then leaves you hanging with almost no background information. I wanted to know place names origins (native American or European) - what is a name derived from, who named it and when, why is it called that, what is the significance of the name, what are previous names, does the name fit or make sense, what are the different spellings - what is the history behind the name? At best this gives you a regional starting point, with not much flesh on the bones. This book is on my place names shelf, but I hesitate to reach for it.
