4.0 out of 5 stars tries to be a good movie
English-language single-dvd period erotic horror-drama from Joe D'Amato is rated NR for lengthy female nudity, but some of its blood and action and all of its pornographic scenes are missing. However this Soft Touch Video dvd print has an authentic look and feel to it and if you are into Roman History it is definitely worth watching and not expensive. One of its stand-out...

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, heavily-edited DVD is a joke, see it uncut PLEASE!
My low score is due mainly to the atrocious DVD release, not the film itself. Why does this DVD bite? Let me count the ways...
1.) Not widescreen
2.) Edited to pieces! The original was much more gory and had several HARDCORE ... scenes.
3.) Poor picture and sound.
The film itself isn't a classic by any means, but this release makes matters worse...

The film itself isn't a classic by any means, but this release makes matters worse. Try to get a hold of an uncut version (available from many cult video dealers) and judge the film that way. Even the amazing Laura Gemser couldn't save this mess of a DVD, but I gave it one star just because she's in it. :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Caligula The Untold Story - Unrated Version dvd, March 17, 2001
By
This review is from: Caligula - La Storia Mai Raccontata (DVD)
Where to begin? Sometimes a dvd lives up to it's billing and sometimes it doesn't. The latter is the case in this instance. From the uncropped opening credits which over-run the screen, to the terrible quality of this supposedly and advertised "Digitally Mastered" dvd. I've seen 2nd generation bootleg video tapes with better picture and sound quality. Add the fact that it is advertised as being Dolby Digital but in reality is of poor quality MONO, then one starts to realize that truth in advertising is a myth. At least as far as Soft Touch Video is concerned. With the name of Soft Touch, however ironic, a strong "Caveat Emptor" is appropriate. With an "Interactive Menu" being nothing more than "scene access" and "start the movie", the actual movie...if this is an uncut version, is a farce. This movie in the "unrated" version should be an "R". There are a few nude scenes but more often than not it merely hints at what is happening or about to happen. Poorly lit, the only good thing about this film is Laura Gemser who looks great despite; how shall we say; creative dubbing. Although it is listed as having a 92 minute run time when in reality it runs 88 minutes from opening credits to the end, we begin to note a pattern of inconsistencies emerging. Which by now is all too familiar. How often have you ever bought any movie which had the REAL run time printed on it? You know? Now that I think about it, I must have gotten the wrong dvd. This can't be the one they advertised. Do yourself a favor and run like hell from this dvd. It just don't cut it bay-beeeee.

However this Soft Touch Video dvd print has an authentic look and feel to it and if you are into Roman History it is definitely worth watching and not expensive. One of its stand-out gore scenes was done better in Patrick Still Lives and Mother Of Tears, but generally the acting and direction are laid-back and extremely good. What lets down this 2004 print is the visual quality in its beach and swimmingpool scenes compared to the 2009 Stormovie mainly-Italian R0 2-dvd boxset 18-rated prints. If you are into this film and can afford it get this one so you know what the players are saying, and then get the visually superior 102m and 125m Italian prints(sold together). The hard porno scenes in the longest and partly-English print are well photographed but are so long that they may become boring. This isnt a D'Amato gorefest like Beyond The Darkness, and you might find that the 102m version-censurata is the one you want to watch again although it is all in Italian. All 3 prints mentioned are 16/9 and R0. I again commend Amazon for believing, as I do, that if you are old enough to vote you are old enough to watch what you want to....

2.0 out of 5 stars BRING BACK BOBBY GUCCIONE!, May 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Caligula - La Storia Mai Raccontata (DVD)
This film takes a lot of its' substance from Tinto Brass' epic 'Caligula' (1980) but is rather more gratuitous and lacks the stylishness of Donati's set-design which for me makes the latter beautiful to look at. I know that now. Malcolm MacDowell played the emperor consumately and its hard to imagine Martine Stephano or Bruce Willis playing Caligula with such sangfroid. This is another auteur offering that attempts to be 'historicaloso' but has more in common with that horrible stream of cak that comes from America & that degenerate English ex-colony Hong Kong. If you are a fan of Joe D'Amato you will appreciate it on a better level; being a Tinto Brass fan I'm biased toward the first attempt to make a film about Caligula. Incidentally, he was no worse than Nero or Domitian. Domitian was as sadistic as the others and would laugh hysterically at the executions of his enemies, while making their families watch. If the families did'nt join in the laughter, he had them branded with hot irons and made them laugh as they were being tortured. If they screamed he'd have them killed. ...Julius Caesar was a cross-dresser with a love of wine ... It was thus common in these times for the ruling elite to act like raving [people]; as they do now. A terrible film about a terrible topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood,sex, horses., September 22, 2008
A story of Caligula less explicitly-sexual than Caligula (Unrated Version) but enough transparent to understand a long way human rights and liberties made since the Roman Republic-an example of the best democracy of then barbaric ancient world, till nowadays.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Adult oriented!, January 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Caligula - La Storia Mai Raccontata (DVD)
This movie is more of an "adult" movie if anything. The story is secondary to what seems to constant explicit scenes of.. well you know what im getting at. This movie is more of a novelty if anything else. I dont recommend wasting your time on this. Go workout or do some gardening, take a nap even. This movie is boring and awful.
