Book Description

June 2, 2009 0300151624 978-0300151626

The early twentieth century brought renewed focus upon the image of the coast and witnessed the formation of art colonies in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and Ogunquit and Monhegan, Maine. These creative communities became an inspiration for artists and art students, among them Edward Hopper, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, and George Bellows. Visually stunning, Call of the Coast: Art Colonies of New England explores the importance of place for artists in these colonies, and the development of impressionist Connecticut and modernist Maine within the visual traditions of the coast of New England.

Featuring approximately 80 works, Call of the Coast illustrates each major painting with extensive interpretative text and includes documentary photography to provide historical context for the artworks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting comments, May 19, 2011
This review is from: Call of the Coast: Art Colonies of New England (Portland Museum of Art) (Paperback)
Looking at the artists, and their work, who formed part of the art colonies in Connecticut and in Maine during the early twentieth century, this study considers about fifty artists, many of them household names.

Following the preface and introduction are the three main sections: Art Colonies of the Connecticut Coast; Ogunquit: The Old Fashioned and the Modern; and Monhegan Island: "Colony in Rock". The book includes and exhibition checklist, selected bibliography, and an artist index.

Each section, following an introduction lists the cataloged works, showing th selected painting on one page with comments about the artist ob the facing page, the content of the notes varies but may contain bibliographic details, observations about the artists work or comments about the painting shown. Forty five paintings are featured in full colour in this way with a further thirty two illustrations showing more work in colour or monochrome period photographs. The artists include Bellows, Hassam, Henri, Hopper, Irvine, Kent, Triscott, Twachtman and many more.

The paintings shown are interesting and varied and the comments informative. However some of the plates are unnecessarily small, the page allows for them to be much larger, and the colours appear often to be subdued - but then I am not fortunate to have seen the original works.
