This book was published almost 50 years ago, but offers a compelling vision and conversation superior to the many new, en vogue books on church structure and vision. Why superior? Because this book is born out of experience and not just theory. The Church of the Savior, its simple structure, and its commitment to building faith around practice may not have attracted huge audiences for its worship services and may not be the answer for those who think entertainment is the way of the future for the church, but it had real impact, inside and outside its walls, and developed a vision that simultaneously simplify's and deepens the church and its life of faith.

I read this years ago and it completely changed the way I conceptualized "church." I want to read it again.

This is one of my favorite books of all time, written about the beginnings of the amazing Church of the Savior in Washington, DC. It seems to me that the ideas conveyed in this book are at least part of the prescription for what churches today are struggling to find--real commitment by members who are excited about their faith, opportunities for new learning in community with others, encouragement for individuals to grow and change as they help each other discover their unique gifts and personality strengths through deep acquaintance with each other in both worship and worldly settings.

Please check out all of Elizabeth O'Connor's titles from the very community she wrote about, PottersHouseDC dot org. As a writer, Elizabeth O'Connor is a mix of psychoanalyst Virginia Satir and priest Henri Nouwen. Very refreshing change from the didactic and sterile tone of some spiritual writing today.

I am having such a hard time reading this paperback book. I have never received a book, via online or in a store, that is so ready to fall apart. Actually, it IS falling apart. It is so distracting to try to keep the book together as I read it. I'm really disappointed that a book in this condition would have been made available without warning.
