This card game is great and has so much to offer in so many ways: from strategy, customizing different decks, player interaction, and of course fun. The rules are straight forward and new players can pick it up fairly quickly. Of course with this being a Fantasy Flight Game the quality is second to none and there are a ton of cards even without adding any expansion packs. Lots of expansions to add to the playability but unlike a collectable card game like "Magic" you do not have to be always spending money on cards. The expansions add alot to the game and the price is very inexpensive for the amount of cards in each one.

It had probably been ten years since I had played a card game when I picked this up. The rules are pretty straightforward and easy to understand and the cards themselves are of outstanding quality. With games like these you can read the instructions all you want but it doesn't mean anything if you don't play. The first game took about two hours but that was only because we were both going back to the rulebook to make sure we were doing things right. By the third game everything was running pretty smoothly and we were both working our own strategies. For those looking to get into this game for the first time, Fantasy Flight Games has an excellent message board where you can ask questions and receive quick, friendly answers. That, plus the fact that additional packs come out every month or so makes this game pretty hard to beat. A must-have for any Cthulhu Mythos fan.

Call of CthulhuDesigner: Nate French Eric M. Lang The first thing I must say is that I am a fan of the literature of H.P. Lovecraft. So much so that being in New England I have visited the sites of several of his stories. I think every student of literature should read the opening paragraphs of the Call of Cthulhu. I don't agree with his outlook on reality, but his ability to write prose is genius. I am also a gamer, there are many CCG products with a good theme, but horrible game mechanics. On top of this many CCG products are money pits which keep card store owners smiling, but are limited in who you can play with. THE CONCEPT OF COC LCG: As a former fan of the COC CCG I remember the lack of attention given to this game. If you go on You Tube you can still see the "Demonstration Game" played with someone with a black robe and another guy. Not only was this of little help understanding the game, it was almost spoofing the game itself. When Fantasy Flight released three games in the LCG format, they made the best core sets I've seen. The directions are no longer little inserts folded into a pack of cards. There is a mounted play board, neat Cthulhu tokens to use to drain your resources. Excellent video tutorials, and individual web pages and support. You truly can by the Core set, organize interesting decks and play some balanced games from the start. The mechanics of the game are well done, but they require some getting used to. You must build resources, sacrificing some of your cards and battle for "Story" cards. At the same time play tactics and special abilities. Characters from Lovecraft's stories and quotes from the stories themselves add to the excellent artwork on the cards. The rulebook does a good job in explaining this. Deckbuilding is made simple by asking newbies to shuffle two factions together and add some neutral cards. As you gain experience you can go online for tips. My beginning question was regarding if this game made sense to buy in these times. If you were thinking of getting into a customizable card game genre, the LCG are really the way to go. I have played Warhammer: Invasion, it's a lot of fun. If you are familiar with the Warhammer universe, that might be your first choice. I have not played the Game of Thrones LCG so I can't give a yeah or neah on it. The Call of Cthulhu is a great game which can make the genre affordable. (You can still go nuts and get every expansion pack under the sun if you want to die a pauper like Lovecraft himself, but it isn't required.) Now I'll let you know my devious plot. The hardest thing in CCG is getting someone to play outside the confines of the FLGS. Well, I gave the core game to some family members as gifts. I have a good supply of partners who without intervention by a van of deprogrammers have been bit by the Cthulhu Mythos and are a phone call away. This is a fun and challenging game you should consider.

As a fan of HP Lovecraft, I have always loved the cthulhu mythos. This card game is dripping with theme and is a blast to play. The game mechanics are nothing like magic the gathering, but players of MTG will pick the mechanics of this game up fairly easily. It is a 2 player game and players can build decks from a variety of "groups" that the core set includes, making for good deck combos since each group has special sets of abilities.check out the video from the publisher's website, to further get an idea on the game. This is one of the best card games I've played. You can play it alone with the core set or customize it with the set expansions. Though, the core set is more than enough for hundreds of fun games. It's a great game for those who enjoy board games and those who just enjoy the Cthulhu mythos. The artwork on the cards is phenomenal. The box construction is also good, it has a matted exterior which is superior to most game boxes(Unless you consider the rest of the FFG boxes). Each game is short, about 30-45 minutes, so you find yourself getting in a few games in an afternoon. Which also makes it perfect if you are in a time crunch. TL;DR version: Great game, I highly recommend it to board game enthusiasts.

The Call of Cthulhu living card game is quite fun, and you really don't need much more than the core set to get started with the game. In fact, it's entirely possible for two people to have plenty of fun with just the core set. Definately a great buy if you're fond of card games but annoyed at the costs of collectible card games.

I can't find the right words to express my contentment. This product is incredibly detailed. Nothing's missing, and since it's the core set you can start playing right away. At first it's a bit confusing since it's a live card game and all, but then after munching your way through the rule book and getting to know the unique characteristics of each of the pieces that are part of the board game you'll soon get the chance to see how fun this game truly is. It arrived quickly, neatly wrapped, and everything intact! The Cthulhu Domain Markers, just wow.

For anybody who is a horror fan, a Cthulhu fan, or a strategy fan, Call of Cthulhu is a very entertaining game. The one downside is that it's a bit difficult to figure out at first, unless you've had extensive experience with other TCGs such as Magic the Gathering. Also, the cards are easily bent, but really, what do you expect from cards? Other than that, I found it more appealing than most other TCGs.

The boxed set gives you everything you need for the game. It has its own wound and success markers and a board. Since the game changed from ccg to lcg they have re-introduced some of the cards from the original sets. A good way to start playing Call of Cthulhu but also good to add to your collection. It also has its own set of story cards and can make two decks of cards but you will want to get asylum packs to add to the game. What else can I say except that I'm glad the game survived the changes and it seems that they will continue to produce many more packs of cards.

Well, I'm not overwhelmed with satisfaction. The graphics are beautiful and Invite play. The additional figurines are very well made and attractive in only the way Cthulhu can be. I was really looking forward to playing this game. I'm familiar with the topic and Lovecraft, but this is a very complicated game. I was looking for games for two adult players so I thought this would be fun. My husband and I spent about half of the day after Christmas trying to play this game using the written instruction and playing the website tutorial on the laptop in front of us and got nowhere. We couldn't even tell if we had the game set up correctly (we are college graduates with four languages between us and we felt pretty dumb by the end of the day). This may have been our first real role playing game attempt. I'm not quite sure. I thought Risk was a role playing game, but it's pretty straightforward, so maybe not. We are determined to learn this game, so we welcome comments. |
