5.0 out of 5 stars 6th Edition of the Original-style Rules, July 15, 2004
This review is from: Call of Cthulhu: Horror Role Playing in the Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft (Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying, 2396) (Hardcover)
The newest version of Call of Cthulhu, the 6th edition, is still based on the familiar "Basic Role Play" rules set from Chaosium. Contrary to some rumors, Chaosium is NOT abandoning its own rules to go to the d20 rules; this particular book is not a new version of the joint Wizards of The Coast / Chaosium "Call of Cthulhu D20." This one is the "Classic Flavor" CoC!

For owners of the immediately-preceding version of Call of Cthulhu, there's not much that's new here, rules wise. Some formatting and layout clean-up, maybe some corrections, but no major rules changes. This version DOES have the same layout as the special Limited Edition CoC rule books that were published some time back, and that IS a change: if you're a collector of CoC gaming books, you'll want to get one of these for that point alone.

If you're a veteran CoC player or Keeper, and you already have a fairly recent version of the rules, you don't absolutely NEED to get this book: your copy will still work. Nothing in the previously-existing material has been made obsolete or invalid. (Maybe keep this new one in mind for a gift or wish-list item, though!)

If you're new to the game, and don't already have a copy of the Call of Cthulhu rule book, don't fret about buying this version if your friends or your Keeper have the previous version. They'll work together just fine!

5.0 out of 5 stars BRP or d20?, May 1, 2004

This review is from: Call of Cthulhu: Horror Role Playing in the Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft (Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying, 2396) (Hardcover)
Ah, the confusion! Well, just as Amazon didn't indicate that CoC d20 was, uh, d20, here, there is no indication which rule-set this one uses. A quick search at Chaosium.com tells us, however, that this one is *not* d20 (as the reviwer below thought)--this is the next edition of good-old Basic Role-Playing rules Call of Cthulhu.

Really, this is just an updating of the 5.6 edition rules (even the cover art is the same), with a few tweaks and so on. That's the Chaosium approach, and one I really admire: Unlike D&D 3.5, when Chaosium does a new edition, they don't try to make the most recent previous edition obsolete. They don't try to *force* you to buy the new one. It may not pull in the most money, but it does make for very loyal customers. (Chaosium vs Wizards of the Coast is a little like Linux vs Microsoft.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game, February 8, 2005

This is the 6th edition of the BRP game Call of Cthulhu, and it is wonderfully done. The artwork is excellent, the book is well put together, and the system is elegant in its simplicity.

Unlike other RPG games, this book provides the player and "Keeper" (the person who runs the game), with everything necessary to run a scenario: rules, monsters, alien technology, etc.

The resistance table is a great game mechanic, and the sanity rules are brilliant. Unlike in D&D, characters within CoC are at a disadvantage, against seemingly impossible odds, and always at risk of losing their minds! In other words, the game strives to create an atmosphere of horror and suspense.

Just don;t get too attached to your investigator!
