Book Description

November 27, 2001

Filled with incredible detail and brought to life by three-dimensional characters, Sue Harrison's magnificent Storyteller Trilogy superbly evokes prehistoric Alaska and the strong people who struggle to survive its forbidding climate. Now, With Call Down the Stars, the saga begun in Song of the River and Cry of the Wind is complete, as Harrison vividly creates flesh-and-blood characters who fight for survival by day and are renewed at night by tales of the brave people who went before. It is the perfect conclusion to a sweeping epic that evokes a believable world sure to enchant all who enter it.

Call Down the Stars

"The Bear-god warriors came like a tsunami from the sea, their poorly made and misshapen outriggers sunk so deeply in the water that the Boat People only stood on the shore staring, sure that a wave would swamp the dugouts before the warriors could beach them. But the sea gods were asleep . . . ."

So begins the story of the little girl called Daughter as she and the grandfather, Water Gourd, flee their villagc and promised death at the hands of the Bear-god warriors. At the end of a perilous and daring journey across the North Pacific, they are guided by sea otters to the islands of the Whale Hunters.

Daughter and Water Gourd believe they have found safety but they are soon ensnared in the plots and schemes of the medicine woman, Kos. She seeks revenge against her son, the warrior-statesman Chakliux, whom she blames for her status as slave-wife among the Whale Hunters.

Unaware of Kos's plans, Chakhux, with the wisdom and help of his wife, Aqamdax, and brother, Sok, has brought the River People into prosperous times. Their lives revolve around caribou hunting in the spring and fall, fishing in the summer, and storytelling during the winter. But years of peace are shattered by Kos's planned vengeance, and it is a forbidden love that makes that vengeance possible. Against the wishes of his people, Aqamdax's brother Ghaden takes the girl Daughter as his wife, giving Kos the opportunity to use the secrets of her poisons and plant medicines to devastate the lives of those she hates.

The conclusion of Kos's story of hatred and revenge is told in a traditional manner, authentic to Native American storytelling that is a unique and stunning departure from modern literature that will both surprise and satisfy the reader.

Call Down the Stars is a series of stories within a story Daughter's tale is presented as a duel between two storytellers, the quick-witted female Qumalix and the silvertongued man Yikaas. As they vie with each other to enchant their tribe with astonishing legends that recall the origins of their people, Qumalix and Yikaas grow in wisdom and, more important, learn that love transcends the boundaries of time and enmity.

From Booklist

This third book in Harrison's Storyteller trilogy completes the tale begun in her two previous works, Song of the River (1997) and Cry of the Wind (1998). This installment, which, like the others, is set in prehistoric Alaska, features two storytellers: Yikaas, a young, handsome, and fiery-tempered member of the River People tribe; and Qumalix, a beautiful, clever, and high-spirited member of the Sea Hunters tribe. These two quick-witted characters spend their evenings sparring verbally and weaving tales of their historic ancestors for their gathered tribespeople. Their nightly contest to tell the most enchanting tale (and the hint of attraction between them) brings to life legends of the tribes' heroic ancestors, much to the delight of the assembled listeners, while also weaving a dramatic plot for readers to follow. Well-written and meticulously researched, Harrison's powerful yarn details the hardships and simplicity faced by prehistoric people while also emphasizing their humanity. It will appeal not only to Harrison's own fans but also to fans of Clan of the Cave Bear (1980). Kathleen Hughes

5.0 out of 5 stars Call Down the Stars, July 28, 2002

This review is from: Call Down the Stars (Storyteller Trilogy, Book 3) (Hardcover)
Sue Harrison's work is not only about storytellers, but also by a storyteller. Her plots are engrossing and the reader can get lost in the emotion of the events.
CALL DOWN THE STARS is not only a wonderful stand-alone book, but a perfect culmination of all her books. In more recent times than her first trilogy, the storytellers in CALL DOWN THE STARS use the old characters from all the books as part of their history and continue to tell new additions to these people's lives while their own stories unfold.
I highly recommend this, and all of Ms. Harrison's books to anyone looking for something new or in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life, January 6, 2002

This review is from: Call Down the Stars (Storyteller Trilogy, Book 3) (Hardcover)
Sue Harrison is one of the best storytellers out there today-- which she proves in the completion of the storyteller saga. She manages to do by creating intriguing characters who are also storytellers, and manages to make a novel with two parallel plots weave together perfectly.

Harrison makes the way of life for the ancient people of Alaska come alive, in all its hardships and joys. She creates complex and differing characters, from K'os, the villain who thinks only of herself in a place and time where cooperation was a necessity to survival, to Daughter, who is gentle and helpful, even to her adoptive mother K'os. This is definitely a novel worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars intriguing, April 26, 2005

A very interesting and beautifully written book. The trilogy is about Alaskans Natives who are story tellers. You begin to feel for the characters and dream with them. I wish that American youth would be required to read these books and other stories like these, so that our young generation would have a better understanding about Native American's culture and past.
Sue Harrison is an extremely creative and intelligent writer, you should read all of her books.
