Product Description

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Developed by Sledgehammer Games (co-developers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), harnesses the first three-year, all next-gen development cycle in franchise history.

Envisions the powerful battlegrounds of the future, where both technology and tactic have evolved to usher in a new era of combat for the franchise. Delivering a stunning performance, Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey stars as Jonathan Irons – one of the most powerful men in the world – shaping this chilling vision of the future of war.

Power Changes Everything.

An Advanced World:

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes place in a plausible future in which technological progress and today’s military practices have converged with powerful consequences. In this carefully researched and crafted vision of the future, Private Military Corporations (PMCs) have become the dominant armed forces for countless nations outsourcing their military needs, redrawing borders and rewriting the rules of war. And Jonathan Irons, the founder and president of the world’s largest PMC - Atlas Corporation - is at the center of it all.

An Advanced Soldier:

Powerful exoskeletons evolve every aspect of a soldier’s battle readiness, enabling combatants to deploy with an advanced lethality and eliminating the need for specialization. The introduction of this gameplay mechanic delivers enhanced player movement and verticality through boost jumps and grappling, covert cloaking abilities, and biomechanics that provide unparalleled strength, awareness, endurance, and speed. With the advent of the exoskeleton and newly advanced armor and weaponry, every soldier commands tactical freedom in any terrain unlike ever before, fundamentally changing the way gamers play Call of Duty across all modes.

An Advanced Arsenal:

Harnessing the power of next-gen platforms, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare brings players into the battlegrounds of the future by boasting a new hi-tech, advanced arsenal and ability set, arming players with all-new equipment, technology, perks, and vehicles like hoverbikes and highly specialized drones. Players can also choose between standard ammunition and an all-new class of directed-energy weaponry that enables totally new gameplay dynamics. And with exoskeletons delivering a massive force multiplier and unprecedented tactical freedom, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare evolves every firefight.

Tentative review after several hours of playing, as of 11/5/14

First, some quick background info - I have played Call of Duty on and off over the last couple of iterations since Modern Warfare 2. My favorite games were Black Ops 1 and MW3, and I have not played CoD4, World at War or Ghosts multiplayer. So there's the info that will influence my validity and opinion. Anyways, onto AW...

The good:
- The gameplay has changed considerably with the addition of the exo suits, and flying around the map can be fun
- The melee punching animation is hilarious
- The pick 13 system taken from BO2 is excellent
- The supply drops are a neat carrot on a stick, but are annoying due to the loading times (described below)

The bad:
- The lag is terrible... Some of the worst I have ever experienced among the CoD games - I've had to stop playing several times because of how frustrating constantly seeing hit markers and then - BOOM! - you're dead!
- Loading times (FOR EVERYTHING) are extremely slow - and by this I not only mean the levels, but also the images for all the weapons, and even the transitions between menus after the matches are horrible
- I'm not certain if there's something I need to do with the graphics - but currently, all the character models look very blurry - making all the customization of your character much less exciting.
- The exo abilities seem to be rarely used, probably because they feel lackluster

And on a more personal level...
I haven't been too much of a fan of many of the guns thus far - and LMGs - which I love to use from time to time, feel uninspired. I'm also not too fond of the futuristic weapons, though I did enjoy them from BO2. It's been a struggle to get accustomed to the additional axis of gameplay, and that will be the biggest change of this iteration by far.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review take 2 November 5, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
My original review magically disappeared. This game looks bad, feels sluggish, lacks environment(no lights to shoot, cars to explode, no objects that scatter, etc). The menus are very unresponsive, the maps are not well designed for the game style, the sound is off, the animations are horrible making the deaths and killcam unsatisfying. The upgrades to gameplay add novelty but no depth so yes this is better than Ghosts but not as good as BO2 or MW3. It is clear this game was made after the fact and converted to work on the PS3 but it runs very poorly so save your money on this if you are still playing last gen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh, not worth the full price. November 5, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Verified Purchase
Meh, not worth the full price. The developers worked on it for 3 years, which means some of the technology is from 2011. I found it to be too much like Unreal Tournament (people jumping up and down, the tactics are boring, zero team work), the graphics are basic/simple on PS3 at least, looks like it was made 3 years ago, not enough realism (in the sense of player mechanics, movement, etc) in multiplier; while in campaign, the story is too predictable & dull. Going back to CoD BO 2. (11-5-14)

3.0 out of 5 stars Tentative Rating & First Impressions November 3, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
This is definitely not the COD you're used to, as far as MP goes. The pace is even faster than it was in BO2, and the exo's make this a whole new ball game. My main reason for the 'not amazing' score here is mostly based on how fast you can be downed. I was told this would be more like BO2 with regard to health. But if you're expecting time to react to campers, you aren't getting it here. I don't want to sound too negative (because I AM having fun online), but the play-style is most comparable to Killzone 3 when you've a jetpack equipped, only you do not feel so beastly. And perhaps this is just my currently poor understanding of the maps and the mechanics; maybe something I'll learn to love in time. For now I just know that not all of the exo mechanics feel intuitive. I'm running with L3, but must stop running, re-click the stick, then flick it in a certain direction to strafe. And half of the time this doesn't actually work. Muting players is not easy, you won't even be able to fill all 13 slots in the beginning, and weapons are outfitted via obtaining kills with said weapon (similar to Battlefield). If nothing else, the game modes are fun and this is a very unique COD experience. You'll also level pretty fast. But the verticality, quick deaths, and lacking map design will take some getting used to. I still WANT to get used to it though; not completely turned off by the cons, such as I was with Ghosts.

People are already complaining about how uninspired this feels (rehashed areas, straightforward survival against bots and drones, etc.), but I have been having fun with it so far. It doesn't have the charm of Zombies or the goal incentives of Extinction, but it's still been plenty of fun for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Constant Freezing November 6, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
Pro: The jump packs and Exo add a whole new element. Maps are more intricate.

Con: Loading screen takes forever. Multi-player glitches and freezes constantly. Menu does not load regularly. This game crashes my PS3 every time I play it. Sometimes i get a few games in, other times I don't even make it through one game.

Honestly, I want to like this game. It is practically impossible to play right now. Hopefully Activision can get their act together and fix the bugs
