Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Developed by Sledgehammer Games (co-developers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), harnesses the first three-year, all next-gen development cycle in franchise history.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Envisions the powerful battlegrounds of the future, where both technology and tactic have evolved to usher in a new era of combat for the franchise. Delivering a stunning performance, Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey stars as Jonathan Irons – one of the most powerful men in the world – shaping this chilling vision of the future of war.

Power Changes Everything.

An Advanced World:

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare takes place in a plausible future in which technological progress and today’s military practices have converged with powerful consequences. In this carefully researched and crafted vision of the future, Private Military Corporations (PMCs) have become the dominant armed forces for countless nations outsourcing their military needs, redrawing borders and rewriting the rules of war. And Jonathan Irons, the founder and president of the world’s largest PMC - Atlas Corporation - is at the center of it all.

An Advanced Soldier:

Powerful exoskeletons evolve every aspect of a soldier’s battle readiness, enabling combatants to deploy with an advanced lethality and eliminating the need for specialization. The introduction of this gameplay mechanic delivers enhanced player movement and verticality through boost jumps and grappling, covert cloaking abilities, and biomechanics that provide unparalleled strength, awareness, endurance, and speed. With the advent of the exoskeleton and newly advanced armor and weaponry, every soldier commands tactical freedom in any terrain unlike ever before, fundamentally changing the way gamers play Call of Duty across all modes.

An Advanced Arsenal:

Harnessing the power of next-gen platforms, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare brings players into the battlegrounds of the future by boasting a new hi-tech, advanced arsenal and ability set, arming players with all-new equipment, technology, perks, and vehicles like hoverbikes and highly specialized drones. Players can also choose between standard ammunition and an all-new class of directed-energy weaponry that enables totally new gameplay dynamics. And with exoskeletons delivering a massive force multiplier and unprecedented tactical freedom, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare evolves every firefight.

As a 55 yr old gamer, I can tell you that not all of us have the reaction speed to do well in super fast paced online multiplayer gaming. But up until this game I have been able to play well enough to have fun. This game is extremely frustrating for me and after going to level 44 I don't see myself even hanging on long enough to stick it out to level 50. Unless you master the exo suit movements in this game and become excellent at pogo sticking all over the map and shooting people from the air, you are going to be creamed. There is no audio warning for opponent location except shots fired. People can run right up behind you and you will never ever hear them. Expensive audio surround sound headsets are a total waste of money in this game. I don't need to be able to sound whore, but I would at least like some idea of immediate surrounding opponents before dying. If my own footsteps are extremely loud, I should be able to hear someone running up behind me. The game is pretty enough and the exo suit abilities are cool too. But if you're going to play online in this game you better learn to master them and be able to shoot from the air. This is an in your face no holds barred run and gun game. The sniper guns have been severely crippled. When I do play, I will be sticking to bots in this latest COD game. Too frustrating for this old timer. As far as switching to classic gameplay - IMO the maps are totally designed with the vertical element in mind for the exo suits. This causes the maps to feel small and cluttered for classic gameplay. I have loved the COD series, but I probably won't be buying them in the future if this is the new direction they're going. It just seems to me that they're really courting the run and gun players and ignoring the rest of us.If COD follows this trend from now on, I won't be buying future versions.

I've spent way too much time on the COD series. Some I've enjoyed more than others with Black Ops being my personal favorite and Ghosts at the bottom. My primary concerns with Advanced Warfare were the connections and speed of the game. Additionally, the "kill time" or amount of bullets you feel on the screen before you die became an issue as well as guns with no recoil. With AW, all of my personal problems with the game still exist and have compounded with the exo suits and the requirement for camping. As a casual gamer that will never be great but who likes to play, here are my pros and cons:

Pros:

- Best campaign to date. Graphics are amazing and the exo suits, despite limited functionality in each level, make this the most entertaining of the campaigns in a long time.

- The graphics are terrific, no getting around it.

- The customization of players and load out is terrific in multiplayer.

Cons (almost entirely multiplayer):

- The speed of the game is unreal. In fact, for a person with a standard internet connection (u-verse, comcast, etc.), it's literally too fast. I've never had success with fighters online becuase timing is so important and lag kills the experience. I wouldn't say this is a fault of the game or fault of mine as other games (BF4, Destiny) work just fine. It's simply a consequence of game design. Everything in the game happens so quickly that there is not much time for a decision. That split second of lag can cost a quick death. Most average famalies with internet services use a similar service. I understand the guy with a hardwired T1 will not have issues, most are not that guy.

- As mentioned earlier, the time to kill is exceedingly quick. My preference is the BF4 model.

Rating based solely on multiplayer mode.

The campaign mode was impressive - really felt like being a part of a movie.

Gameplay in multiplayer mode is drastically different than that of the gameplay in the campaign mode. In the campaign mode you may or may not (depending on how far along you are in the story) have an Exo Suit which means you may or may not have the ability to jump to rooftops, so you'll have to be strategic in your advancement towards enemies (i.e. taking cover behind objects/buildings). In multiplayer mode, you are always equipped with an Exo Suit, so you can jump around like a lunatic all you want while you shoot wildly at your enemies (who are also jumping around like lunatics).

Multiplayer Mode:

If you like the idea of jumping on a trampoline and shooting a gun at a target, you might like this game.

Multiplayer mode is built COMPLETELY around the Exo Suit. You can jump around from rooftop to rooftop and cover ridiculous distances in a short amount of time which makes this game overly fast-paced and a pure "run and gun" and "spray and pray" game experience (snipers, or "campers," will hate this game). Also, instead of having flash grenades, EMP grenades, Smart grenades...etc. to use against enemies like you do in the campaign mode, the multiplayer mode gives you Exo Abilities like running faster, becoming invisible (sort of), or using a shield. The Exo Abilities only last for several seconds and are mostly pointless.

There is absolutely no strategy involved in the multiplayer mode. Those who enjoy flanking enemies under the radar, planting traps (i.e. claymores), and making tactical decisions will not enjoy this game. NOTE: there are no claymores, IEDs, or mines..etc.
