The queen of military romance does it again!,
By
This review is from: Call of Duty (Paperback)
Lovelace makes the military come alive with her fast-paced, timely plots and well-conceived characters. The romance is always hot and the protagonists believable and appealing. Jennifer and Mike don't seem to be well-matched, but when they're together, the heat's turned on high. Readers will enjoy the suspense and the romance both...neither lets up!

Another brilliant romantic military intrigue,
By A Customer
This review is from: Call of Duty (Paperback)
U.S. Air Force Captain Jennifer Vargas admits that she does not always follows procedures and is one of the most disorganized people in the military. She wants out of the military, but needs her superior officer, Lieutenant Colonel Mike Page to approve her request. Mike knew the feisty officer would be a handful, but he never anticipated falling in love with her. Neither Jen or Mike expected to become involved in a dangerous investigation that leads to them dodging bullets, being kidnapped, and arrested on trumped up charges. Their drama begins when one of Jen's co-workers dies and she downloads his computer files on floppies for back up. She finds one cryptic program on one of the files, which lead to their investigation that brings them to the attention of a very powerful person. This individual does not want anyone interfering with his plans and will do whatever it takes to eliminate anyone who dares try, including a pair of aviators who have fallen in love with one another. Merline "The Magician" Lovelace is a master at scribing an exciting, disturbing, and plausible military romance. The believable story line provides insight into the military way of life, but does so in a very interesting, up-close way. CALL OF DUTY examines the potential danger of civilians stepping over the line and misusing the military, a scenario that seems all too plausible. Ms. Lovelace writs thrillers that rival the best of Dale Brown and John Gilstrap. Harriet Klausner

A Cross Genre Novel,
By Northeast Texas Reader (Northeast Texas, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Call of Duty (Paperback)
Without a doubt, this is one of my favorite books. It is one of those cross genre novels incorporating romance, suspense, and computer technology. I loaned it to a male friend, who enjoyed the military subplot aspects. All of Col. Lovelace's "Duty" novels should be enjoyable to men who like military suspense novels but shy away from those "mushy" romance novels.

Excellent romantic suspense,
This review is from: Call of Duty (Paperback)
This was my first book by Merline Lovelace and I was impressed! When Captain Jennifer Vargas's civilian co-worker suddenly dies, Jennifer is put in charge of his database. His computer files reveal strange discrepancies that Jennifer cannot ignore. Intrigued, Jennifer makes a copy of the files to investigate on her own time, never realizing this could almost cost her her life. Colonel Mike Page considers Jennifer a thorn in his side, but when he is caught up in the dangerous quest for the truth, the two cannot deny their strong attraction for eachother. Together Mike and Jennifer must prove a conspiracy that could rip apart the military.

I picked this book out on a whim...and then didn't put it down for 3 hours! Lovelace is a fantastic author. Her characters are interesting and likeable. A must-read for anyone who has an interest in both romance and the military.

You will fear for Jennifer and Mike in this thrilling story fraught with a theme so believeable you can't put it down. Thought provoking, this one will make the hair on your arms stand up when you realize Merline has painted a scenario that likely has happened...and will do so again. It's frightening and intriguing. It's guaranteed you'll love Mike and Jennifer as they fall deeply with each other against all the rules and regulations. It will put you on the edge of your seat wondering what the military will do to their careers. Merline's novels are always the best!

Enjoyable but not a keeper,

This review is from: Call of Duty (Paperback)
I like Merline Lovelace (what a great name for a romance writer!!) Her knowledge of the Airforce is great and she gives you tiny details which make that world seem real and alive. Mike Page was a delicious hero, with an iron jaw, a perfect body and he could cook. I liked him a lot and could relate to his perfectionism and his pain. However the heroine, Jen Varga seemed less well drawn. I found her a bit irritating if truth be told (and as this is a review, where better to tell the truth!) She seemed to get into serious situations without giving it due thought - her marriage, her career, her current trials in the book, were all approached in a slap dash manner and she seemed younger than her years. While Mike had suffered and grown, she seemed to be stuck in a petty rebellious mode. Having said all that it was an interesting read, and I was happy to have it, but I won't keep it. Hope this helps you, amf

This was my first Merline Lovelace novel. It was a quick read, but did not compare to the military writings of Suzanne Brockmann. Maybe that's because the air force men were not as hot and interesting as SEALs are.
This book was not bad, but it did have a few flaws. It starts out rather slow and uninteresting in the beginning. The suspense does pick up a little, but it is the character's attraction that keeps the story moving along. The ending seemed too rushed and did not rap up as well as it could have. The villains were never a mystery, there were no twists and turns and no surprise ending. You pretty much know everything within the first few chapters, including everyone involved. Even though I breezed through reading it in about eight hours, I just didn't find it that suspenseful. Save yourself some money and check this one out from the library. |
