Call of Duty comes to the DS,

First person shooters, especially first person shooters done right, are rare on the DS, and the Call of Duty series makes it's debut on Nintendo's handheld with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. For those that don't already know, Call of Duty 4 marks the series' change of scenery from World War II to the modern day war combat, and it makes a surprisingly good debut on the DS as well. The first thing you'll notice is that the game offers some surprisingly good graphics that take advantage of what the DS can do, despite some occasional hiccups that occur. The game sounds spectacular as well, and the control is tight for the most part. The only real drawbacks of Call of Duty 4 is that, like it's home console bretheren, offers a pretty short single player campaign. Multiplayer mode is fun, but somewhat flawed, thanks to no offering of online play. Despite it's few negatives, Call of Duty 4 is a more than solid FPS on the DS that is good while it lasts, and for DS owners yearning for a modern day war shooter, look no further.

Great Game,

This is a great game. It's fun, sometimes challenging and the graphics are pretty good considering the screen size it was made for. I've played all of the Call of Duties from 2 through 4 on three different systems and if you compare it to others that are meant for a larger display, you may be disappointed. But I was rather surprised that the quality was as good as it was. There are levels which are frustrating because they are a little harder than others. So if you enjoy playing on a small portable device, and it doesn't bother you that you can't play it online, then don't hesitate to purchase Call of Duty 4 for Nintendo DS!

Solid but short and buggy,

Pros: Good sound, decent graphics. Simple fun. Physics are uninspired but if you have played CS 1.6 they are familiar. Mission objectives are well placed to get the most out of the ground levels. The explosives placement and disarming mini-games are fun. The AC-130 level is especially fun, and pleasantly unexpected given most modern combat games neglect this critical piece of air power. Weapon selection is minimal, but well rounded. 2 Assault rifles (M4 and AK47), 3 submachine guns (MP5, Mac-9 and Uzi) 1 shotgun, 1 pistol, RPG-7 in certain areas and 2 sniper rifles (Dragunov and Scout) and flash and frag grenades. I have not played the multiplayer.
Cons: Extremely short, almost too simple. The main storyline did not translate well from the console version as the cutscenes are replaced with well done but uninteresting comic book-like panels that poorly advance the story. There is a missing distinct feeling of scope and grandeur. Missions are more like arcade shooters, very 'rail' based and heavily scripted, only giving you one possible route through the map. The most tactically complex decision will be which side of a box to go around, and that is usually decided for you by the map design. The vehicle levels are the worst, no control over the vehicle at all, just the gun. Enemies are not static, and will miraculously appear where there were none before or were all killed sometimes spontaneously appearing if you move fast enough to beat the scripted event. AI is nonexistant, many enemies will take themselves out with their own grenades, and moving quietly to make the best tactical opportunity is impossible as the AI always knows where you are and starts shooting before you even come around the corner. This is especially frustrating when dealing with the snipers that kill in 1 shot. Clipping issues on many corners, enemies can damage you though corners but yet all your shots are blocked till you are well clear of the door or box. The touch screen controls are nice, but my hand tends to block too much of the screen at the extremes of the screen or when turning.

I love this game!!!! This game has got to be one of the best if not the best game to get on ds!!!!!!! I love being in the chopper on a minigun and flying around in an AC-130 Spectre gunship!!!!!! The fighting on the ground is intense. I would reccomend this game to anyone who likes first person shooter or just like blowing things up!!!!!!!!!!!

it certainly is a good game. The graphics are nice(nothing spectacular, but they do look nice), and gameplay is fun. The controls do take a little time to find that "sweet spot"(holding it comfortably for extended periods of time). I am about halfway through, and I havn't encountered any bugs or anything. The game plays just fine. The single-cartridge multiplayer is pretty fun, but gets boring after awhile. This a great fps game for the ds, however, only get it if you dont have a next gen console.

First I'm not Scott, I'm his son. I got this game and it was so fun! It gives you a feel of what's really happening in the middle east. Because when people die body parts don't go flying all over or anything like that. they fall and then they disappear. then you can pick up their gun. and use it. it has good graphics and an understandable plot. it teaches you the basics then puts you to the test. it gives you hum-vees, attack copters, and missile base action as well as the basic walking (which I like best!) I like the mini games, explosives, and a special mini game in the level On Approach. Don't bother looking for cheats unless you have a game shark. or if you have a good cheat website. it does not swear at all unlike recent models. oh and when a guy gets shot it's not all gorey and stuff, it looks like gas. check out this book- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Official Strategy Guide

a great FPS for the DS,

this is the first FPS ive actually enjoyed on the DS. i tried metroid prime:hunters, but found the enless running around, trying to find out where to go was a bit annoying. COD is straight up running around shooting the hell out of stuff, which is right up my alley.
right away, i noticed the great graphics. granted, thats not saying alot if u compare the DS to the PSP, but i loved them nontheless. the aiming/shooting was spot on, and the only problem (as other reviewers have stated) is the double tap to zoom in on a target. often times i would be in a heated situation, and frantically try to zoom in on an enemy, only to get killed in the end due to not being able to control the scope. a great number of weapons in this game...from sniper rifles, to grenades, to gas bombs, to shotguns. each weapon has its own strenths and advantages. my favorite is the sniper rifle, getting them right between the eyes with a head shot (head shots kill the enemies almost instantly, they can withstand several point blank shots to their bodies tho). ovarall....great game. several different types of level design, from basic FPS, to overview, to missions on vehicles. a good variety of gameplay. it also clocks in a bit on the short side....maybe 20 hours for me to beat the game, but you can always go back and replay any missions you have beaten. i wouldnt hesitate to recommend this game to any DS owner.

I just got this game, and it is the best Call Of Duty game I have ever played. (on the ds) Allthough it doesn't compare with the wii version it is still a good buy. I would recomend letting your kids play the ds Call Of Duty games before the console versions. They are better (blood and gore wise) than the consol versions are, plus the ds ones are rated T. Whereas the consol ones are rated M. I would highly recomend this game for kids ages 11-13 years old. The only down side to the ds COD games is that they are shorter than the consol versions. But they are still very fun.

They both end at a bridge. They both have you alternating missions between different factions. They both have you killing a hell of a lot of terrorists with automatic weapons. Beyond that though, there's not much in common between Call of Duty 4 on consoles/PC and it's handheld little brother on the DS.
"Dang it, I didn't double tap." What is the most common phrase you'll use while playing this game? Double-tapping the screen brings up the sights on your weapon, but all too often after double-tapping, you'll tap again to aim and it'll go back to the crosshairs; or you'll just want to turn and end up double-tapping into the sights. It's an annoying enough occurrence while simply playing the game, but a downright pain when being shot at. That's not the game's only fault, just the biggest. Unlike on it's big brother, the enemies take way too many bullets to kill. Factor in the complete inaccuracy of the crosshairs, you'll spend all you're time trying to get headshots while aiming down the sights. Well not that much different than the console/PC iteration, the extra time it takes to get into the sights and aim makes dieing a very real possibility when faced with multiple enemies, especially if they're on either side of the screen. Some sections of the game seem to feature multiple deaths and considering the game's not very portable, this poses a problem. As a handheld game, it should feature short levels and multiple checkpoints to save at. The levels aren't terribly long, but since you can't save anywhere or even at checkpoints, you'll have to play a level in one sitting or start over. I had the DS in sleep mode for the past week to finish this game. Being a DS game, it wouldn't be complete without some completely useless touch-screen based mini-games for things that don't need it. You know how on the console/PC, when you want to place a charge you just walk up to where you place it and press the action button? Not on this version. Instead, you must make an electrical current match up to various points by rotating tiles so the electricity flows to all the ends. I now feel completely prepared to dis-arm a bomb if need be because of this game. Apparently bomb defusal is as simple as tracing the wires from one end to the other. Who knew? Not all is bad though. Despite the combat being very repetitive and slow, I really found myself enjoying playing through most of the game. The C-130 mission in particular was a blast to play through on the DS, if not a little hard to tell you're soldiers from the enemies. Not surprisingly, IGN gave the sound the best score for this game. n-Space did a fantastic job with the audio, but Nintendo failed with the speakers. When played through headphones, there is so much more sound there. Not only do the guns and explosions sound more realistic, but you can actually hear you're character breathing hard after running and after being shot. I know with headphones on everything is going to sound better, but it's like two completely different games and headphones go a long way to making the experience more enjoyable. I don't think anybody expected this game to live up to it's big brother. It does a good job of holding it's own and being a fun game on the DS, just not one I'd pick & play anytime soon. This game was made because it was a Call of Duty 4 tie-in, but I think it would've gotten more attention as a new franchise. Out the gate, most people had to be skeptical of a DS version of CoD4. Whereas if this had been an original game, people would've been more excited to see another FPS on DS. Wi-Fi wouldn't hurt either. I will say from what I played of Brothers in Arms DS & this, this was a better game.

This is my second game for my week and a half old Nintendo DS. I love it. The levels are well thought out, it is very realistic, and the controls are great.
First off: controls. The controls are intuitive and extremely easy to pick up. My friend played it and beat a level on hard the first time, and I hadn't told him how to play. The stylus, D-pad, and left trigger are all you need. It is very easy Graphics: I expected better graphics. The graphics look like something you would see in a flash game off the Internet. But I don't understand why everyone thinks that graphics make the game, because the graphics don't hinder this game AT ALL. Replay value: Personally, I would play this over and over and over. And over. Being able to fight against or alongside your friends is incredible fun. Doing the campaign again on a harder level is fun. The lack of Wi-Fi multiplayer is annoying, but tolerable. Overall, Call of Duty 4 for DS is a great game that I would highly recommend. You won't be able to stop. |
