1999's Call To the End was the second album from Brazilian progressive metal band Symbols. The band is best known for providing vocalist Edu Falaschi to Angra after that band's split with Andre Matos. Falashci and Angra proved to be a match made in heaven, and it was after hearing his work on albums like Rebirth and Temple of Shadows that I decided to track down this Symbols album.

Symbols had a melodic, socially-conscious approach to progressive metal that was quite similar to Angra's, which is understandable given Angra's role in the Brazilian metal scene. It's not overly technical, not too far into power metal territory, and doesn't have the best production. Honestly, it's Edu Falaschi's vocal performance that makes this album worthwhile, and the reason I gave it a 4-star rating instead of the 3-star rating it probably deserves. The musicianship and songwriting are totally decent, but Falaschi's unique voice is what commands attention and makes the songs really come alive.

Edu Falaschi wasn't the only band member to leave the ranks of Symbols. As a result, Call To the End was the band's final offering. It's a bit pricey, and not easy to find, but if you're a fan of Angra version 2.0 and/or Falaschi's other band Almah, Call To the End is worth checking out.
