5.0 out of 5 stars Call Forth the Mighty Men, December 1, 1999
This review is from: Call Forth the Mighty Men (Hardcover)
The unique thing about this book from others I have read on the civil war is the fact that it is based on the letters, diaries and first hand accounts recorded by the people who were there at the time they happened. A letter written by a soldier to family at home when he does not know whether he will ever see them again contains honesty rarely found in other situations. The book gives a sobering account of the impact the conflict had on the lives of people living through it. It is completly bare of any cloak of romance or adventure that is so often present in an attempt to make a book commercial. It is certainly a gut wrenching unbiased presentation of both sides. Since reading the book I have given it as a gift to several friends. There are many accounts from the point of view of historians, politicians and professional military but few from those with views untainted by rank, reputation or need to revise history. A quote from the Editor in the Publisher's Preface (The needless and sensless nature of a civil war, fought for intangible ideals of questionable value....) fairly represents the sense you get from the quotes from the people who experienced this terrible tragedy.
