The band couldn't have chosen a better way to close this trash metal classic album than with this epic haunting/dark instrumental that goes by the name of "The Call of Ktulu". The song's title is a reference to horror/fantasy novelist H. P. Lovecraft and it was recorded at Sweet Silence Studios in Denmark during the spring of 1984. Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine co-wrote it with the band with an appropriate somber mood in mind. The main attraction here are the song's killer arpeggios throughout which at first are quiet and mysterious but before long turn heavy and mean! Also included is an intense lead guitar solo from Kirk Hammet featuring descending four point layovers that give off a neo-classical vibe. One of the repeated melodic themes is taken through multiple key changes and toward the later half, the song switches into an unexpected bridge with a harmonized lead guitar motif before going back to the quiet intro theme.
Drummer Lars Ulrich holds everything together with a nice combination of laid back and aggressive drumming and last but not least bassist Cliff Burton even gets the chance to play lead bass! The coda is also fabulous with Hetfield hitting a sequence of fifth chords right after Ulrich hits a tympani...this ending has an orchestral score approach perhaps anticipating the band's "S&M" experiment! A metal masterpiece that has to be heard!
