5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomeness.
This is an awesome CD by Mortal Treason.

The main aspect that caught my attention the most was the vocalist who has awesome vocal range. He utilizes 4 distinct vocal types on this album: Speaking vocals, clean singing, screaming, and growling. He utilizes all these types in creative ways in different songs, so you're always listening to something different...

3.0 out of 5 stars Martyrs Bring Blood and Fire...
In 1998, a group of 4 young people released an album that has yet to be matched (or even contended with) in the metalcore genre. An album of impeccable musicianship, sharply (and brilliantly) hissed vocals, soul-shattering riffs, and beautiful instrumental leads that has forever changed the metalcore scene. This breathtaking record pleaded with us to lay down our pain...

This is an awesome CD by Mortal Treason.

The main aspect that caught my attention the most was the vocalist who has awesome vocal range. He utilizes 4 distinct vocal types on this album: Speaking vocals, clean singing, screaming, and growling. He utilizes all these types in creative ways in different songs, so you're always listening to something different and innovative. The lyrical content is mostly about God and Jesus and is written in a direct and understandable format instead of riddling everything with similes and metaphors (both a positive and negative thing, in my opinion).

The music is very heavy and the songs often have many tempo changes, going from slow to very fast, although never too slow, and never at hyper speed. The songs also tend to do a lot of mood shifts, going from melodic to heavy to somewhere in between several times. The drumming is well done and it is nice, for once, to hear creative use of the double bass. The bass is full, and deep, complementing the guitars with an audible low-end (there is also one song where the bass sounds a little emotional and creepy at the same time, done in a very creative way).

This is definitely a good buy. All the songs have their own distinct feel, and their is also a hidden acoustic track, making a total of nine songs. Nine songs may not sound like a lot, but the songs are usually around 5+ minutes. The artists behind Mortal Treason have discovered the virtue of quality over quantity by really developing the songs into creative and distinct pieces of musical work.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOTS OF ENERGY, August 4, 2004
This review is from: A Call to the Martyrs (Audio CD)
Man I am so proud of these guys for being so Hardcore in there message about Christ in there lives and in there music. They have been on Headbangers Ball, THAT IS AWSEOME.
Anyways, the Music is brutal and very Intence. The singer's voice is amazing also.
It's nice to know that you don't have to be watered down in your lyics or sell out to get reconized in the world of metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indescribable passion!, September 14, 2004
This review is from: A Call to the Martyrs (Audio CD)
Again I saw this band at Ichthus this past year and I was blown away by the brutality of this little known band. Their name stuck in my head and I was looking for their cd but I couldn't find it until I recently had my one of my familly members buy it for me. Let me just say that Mortal treason is brutal music and it is superb brutal music. Seth's voice is diverse in that he is able to go from a low growl to a Zao like scream, and that must be hard to transition from and he does that in almost every song. The lyrics are straight forward Christian lyrics and I think that is awesome. More Christian metal, and hardcore bands need to learn from Mortal Treason that you shouldn't have to water down your lyrics. That is awesome. Also what is amazing that the last song is a worship song and it is soft and after Seth sings he basically invites those who don't know Christ to get to know Him. I have not heard too many bands that will take a risk like that and add an invitation to know Christ on their album. Way to go. Now I gave it 4 stars because the double bass by the drummer is a little choppy at times and this cd is only 9 songs yet it is over 40 minutes long so that is good, but I wish they would have more songs on their next cd. I could get even more technical but I'm not going to because these guys are passionate at what they are doing and I highly respect that. Keep up the good work Mortal Treason and God bless.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE metal release of 2004, February 26, 2004

From Seth Kimbrough's incredible vocal range to the dual guitar breakdowns, this CD is a must have. Every song is tight and if you have the chance to see these guys live, wear a mouthpiece. The pits are insane. You MUST buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Call To The Martyrs!, September 30, 2005
This review is from: A Call to the Martyrs (Audio CD)
Metalcore that even Jesus would listen to! No clever metaphors, just straight lyrics that says, "Purify me Lord." Without a doubt the most faith based metalcore there is. The lyrics are very, very uplifting. Buy this and feel like you're being baptized!

3.0 out of 5 stars Martyrs Bring Blood and Fire..., May 1, 2004
This review is from: A Call to the Martyrs (Audio CD)
In 1998, a group of 4 young people released an album that has yet to be matched (or even contended with) in the metalcore genre. An album of impeccable musicianship, sharply (and brilliantly) hissed vocals, soul-shattering riffs, and beautiful instrumental leads that has forever changed the metalcore scene. This breathtaking record pleaded with us to lay down our pain where blood and fire bring rest and peace. Mortal Treason have taken up those reigns and placed it upon themselves to continue in revealing such truths to us.

Musically, Mortal Treason sticks to their tried and true metalcore formula throughout "A Call to the Martyrs". Zao and Living Sacrifice are obvious influences as seen through the strings section of "Khampa Nomads", but other more subtle influences arise scattered throughout the album, such as Tool, Trouble, and Obsessed. While some might see Mortal Treason's sound as nothing but a rehash of material that was groundbreaking several years ago, it is still difficult to dismiss the creative leaps taken on "Walk in the Woods". There is never anything wrong with resurrecting styles and adding personal touches to it in order to make it your own.

Lyrically, Seth definitely lacks in the metaphorical department. However, this is what gives the album a fresh taste. Bands like Living Sacrifice, The Blamed, Unashamed, and Everdown flourished in the 90's because of their spirit-filled nature (hence the title spirit-filled hardcore). Kimbrough and company have undoubtedly paid homage to such groups with this definitive spirit-filled release.

In conclusion, with "A Call to the Martyrs" Mortal Treason has tried to do one thing: preach the one true message of the cross through a vacuum of bone-crushing metallic grind; and in this they have succeeded in their call. Now it is up to us to answer.

Though not one of my very top favorite metal CDs, this is actually a very good musical working! I first heard these guys on Pandora actually, and being a big fan of the more positive metal out there, I just had to pick it up! Very cool CD. If you're into metal/death metal stuff, check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just plain good music, January 16, 2007
This review is from: A Call to the Martyrs (Audio CD)
I wouldn't consider myself religious at all and I'm not really into bible preaching or anything like that but I heard "Khampa Nomad" and I just loved the all out brutality of the song. So I looked these guys up and found that I loved pretty much all of the songs on this album. You can't tell what the singer is saying anyways half the time. This album is unrelenting and heavy.. the all out power it drives it what made this album great to me. If you're scared at all by heavy religious lyrics and imagery then I'd stay away, but if you love metal and heavy music then have a listen and I promise you won't be sorry.
