Book Description

After Ishmael's boat sinks, he is thrust into a struggle to preserve the universe from an implosion caused by Eisenhower's retro-active admission of the state of Ohio! Surrounded by a bizarre fellowship, does Ishmael have the right stuff to save trillions of worlds, solve the mystery of his missing father, find love, and discover the perfect boat, all in 48 hours?

How can you save the universe if it won't hold still?

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun, quick read - In need of some work February 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Call me Ishmael is a fun, engaging story, if you don't think about it too much.If you are looking for a serious discourse in multi-dimensional theory, then this is not the book for you. And really, why are you in the fiction section, anyway.

Now, if you are looking for a fast-past ride with an engaging main character, then you are in the right place.

Call me Ishmael is a first person narrative of our main character, who goes by Ishmael. I say goes by, because that's not really his name. Regardless, our main character is literally plucked out of his day off, attacked by a hit man and abducted by the most beautiful woman he has ever met. He goes through all this, to ... you guessed it - save the world from a rift caused by the Ohio statehood incident in 1803. (Here's the part where you should just shake your head and go `OK' and move on, because you are not going to get an good explanation on why.)

His natural reaction to this is, of course, to immediately fall head over heels in love with the blond,Finnie, even when she recognizes it and immediately shoots it down. Which is what really makes the humor work for this book. Male readers will immediately recognize Ishmael's response to Finnie, and female readers will get a glimpse into the desperate male mind.

And this is where it goes to the needs a little work department. The continuous glorification of Finnie is a little over the top. Dodging hit men, giant ape creatures, alien bugs, etc. and almost all the main character is doing is giving a running description of how beautiful Finnie is. You get to the `come on' point with the running description about half way through, but look past it, because it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good quick laugh December 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed reading this book and was glad that I downloaded it. Before you start reading it - take a breath and just let your brain go for a few hours. This was great airplane reading - although the other passengers kept giving me sideways glances as I laughed out loud. The best part about it is, if I were to write a book - this is probably how it would end up...Some folks wondering how your mind works, others thinking "that's what I would have said..."
The characters entered and departed the story in a way that kept my attention and the humorous random thoughts kept me laughing. Glad I downloaded this book, would like to see Erick Flaig write another book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fast Paced Fantasy November 6, 2011
By R. Song
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One ordinary guy with more than his share of hangups discovers that he's really one of a kind. After a boating incident where he refers to himself as "Ishmael" and falls crazy in love with "Finnie", he finds himself on an interdimensional quest to save not only his dimension but all of them.

THis is not the sort of story you should analyze. There's a lot of stuff that doesn't make much sense. When you read something silly, laugh it off and keep going. The author seems to have a great sense of humor.

The constant flash-backs to the main character's childhood and Finnie's perfection get tire-some quick. I finally skimmed over those to enjoy the rest of the story. Occasional editing mistakes and missing words got a bit annoying as well. BUt.. those drains are a small price to pay for frolicing insensibly across dimensions and meeting interesting creatures.

Well worth the time to read!
