I am a fifth grade teacher and have used this book for the past two or three years. I find it very engaging and a great link to teach children about the immigration waves of the early 1900's, the labor movement, the mood of New York City, and many other topics.

The children find the book very interesting.

I use this book for my fourth grade literature circle group when we study immigration. I can only find it on Amazon now. It tells the story of a jewish immigrant girl and her experiences as she leaves her country to come to America. The struggles of the immigrants are portrayed within its pages. The students can feel what life was like for Ruth. We had great discussions in our group. I also enjoyed the part where she learns to appreciate her mother instead of being embarrassed by her!

I liked this book because it was adventorous, and the main character was strong and courages Also Ruth the main character has to make a desicion to follow her beautiful american teacher or her mother who is in jail because she went on strike with five hundred other women. It is kind of sad though because Ruth's father dies and Ruth yells at her mother a lot for not acting like an american. So read the book to find out more.
