I am a fifth grade teacher and have used this book for the past two or three years. I find it very engaging and a great link to teach children about the immigration waves of the early 1900's, the labor movement, the mood of New York City, and many other topics. The children find the book very interesting.

Call Me Ruth,

I use this book for my fourth grade literature circle group when we study immigration. I can only find it on Amazon now. It tells the story of a jewish immigrant girl and her experiences as she leaves her country to come to America. The struggles of the immigrants are portrayed within its pages. The students can feel what life was like for Ruth. We had great discussions in our group. I also enjoyed the part where she learns to appreciate her mother instead of being embarrassed by her!

Call Me Ruth Read By Kristen Munoz,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Call Me Ruth (Paperback)
I liked this book because it was adventorous, and the main character was strong and courages Also Ruth the main character has to make a desicion to follow her beautiful american teacher or her mother who is in jail because she went on strike with five hundred other women. It is kind of sad though because Ruth's father dies and Ruth yells at her mother a lot for not acting like an american. So read the book to find out more.

This book is great for teaching a young child about immigration. This book contains a clear description of what it was like to be a young, Jewish girl coming to America. If you want to teach a young Jewish girl about her heritage, buy this book!

Call Me Ruth was such an interesting book that I could not put it down. Ruth has an embarrasing mother they both came from Russia to live in America, with Ruths father. In a few months he died. So Ruth and her mother live Aunt Sadie,Uncel Barney and their children. I recommend this book to everyone.

Interesting, but I hated Ruth.,

I loved the descriptions of Victorian immigrant life, and found that aspect to be very interesting. All the same, I couldn't tell whether or not we were supposed to like Ruth as a character. She was snotty and horrible to her mother and obviously didn't care about anyone but herself. No wonder she didn't have any friends! Read this book as a book report book- it is short but has historical content.
