5.0 out of 5 stars A Call To Sanity
I think it would greatly beneficial for all religious people (mainly Christians) to read this book. It is very straight forward (a teenage child could read it and understand, without advanced courses in philosophy, biology, evolution and astronomy). Then maybe many believers could understand why someone would be an athiest.

After reading the reviews about this book I decided to get a copy. The chapters are fairly short and easy to read. The book actually could have been much shorter but the typesetting and spacing have made the book larger than it needs to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent (if you have an open mind) !, March 21, 2006
This review is from: A Call to Sanity: The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God from a Rational Atheistic Perspective (Paperback)
I myself was born christian (as most americans are) so for me to be reading a book on atheism is pretty weird. But I will say this. There is definately alot to discuss and ponder in A Call To Sanity. I like the way it was written, in a calm style and not trying to lose the reader with scientific and philosophical jargon. Everything (from evolution to big bang to intelligent design, and everything in between) is xplained in an obvious well thought out manner. This book, along with my new insights on what it means to be "objective and rational", ironically (for a christian) dont make me feel bad and evil, but actually and honestly enlightened. I now understand why many do not believe in the concept of a God. A must read for atheists and believers alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands down, a must read !!, March 20, 2006
This review is from: A Call to Sanity: The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God from a Rational Atheistic Perspective (Paperback)
To All: I just wanted to let everyone know that I am enjoying this book immensely! Not only in me reading the book, but in me sharing the book! As I read the book I have been throwing questions out to people who claim to be so "religious" and the response I am getting from them is "wow, I never thought to ask those types of questions!" I am enjoying this book immensely and thank Mr. Yeldell for providing the world with a clear honest understanding of Rational Atheism and clear concise arguments against the irrational.... S. 5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Book on Atheism, May 17, 2008
This review is from: A Call to Sanity: The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God from a Rational Atheistic Perspective (Paperback)
I purchased A call to Sanity after reading all of the reviews and web articles I could find.

First: The reviews for this book range from greatness to mediocre. I actually find the book leaning more toward greatness.

As stated by others, the book is very very easy to read and contains arguments that are superbly explained ad exemplified. Yeldell seems to have taken a road less treveled by authors on this subject and focused alot on many topics that are glossed over or not explained at all.

I particularly loved how Mr. Yeldell took the time to offer a potential falsification of each one of his arguments. (this shows that although Mr. Yeldell is a a "New Kid" on this block), he understands the weight of this issue and how it is to be approached! This is to be commended. I also liked how he provided the reader with mini "science lessons" on issues regarding Physics, Genetics and Evolution before he delves into an argument involving such. This is subtle but extremely helpful (especially to those not learned in the theories). Yeldell handles this well.

Lastly: I read other review comments regarding the formatting issues with the book. I actually liked the spacing of the book. Coupled with his explanatory style, It makes the book very easy to read.

There are a few minor grammatical errors ive noticed (very few) but I guess this is to be expected by an author without the budget of a Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins. The complaints regarding this are overblown.

Mr. Yeldell's first entry into this arena is a good one. Instanly, he shows that its possible to catapult yourself into a serious debate (with the intelligencia of the world) as long as you have the intellect and know how.

I look forward to Mr. Yeldell's next book on this topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!!, February 17, 2008
This review is from: A Call to Sanity: The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God from a Rational Atheistic Perspective (Paperback)
This book is simply superb, eloquent and very well written. In a sea of philosophical and theological books on the subject of th ephilosophy of atheism, A Call To Sanity stands on its own simply because of its clarity and tone.

Highly recommended to all readers of Dawkins, Harris and Schermer

5.0 out of 5 stars I Met Jason Yeldell in Person !, May 13, 2006

I do want to Thank you for a great thought provoking presentation you gave to my college classroom. I have received numerous comments, all positve. One of the students wrote " This is all mind blowing stuff there. I remember being in class thinking this guy has some really good points. He is making me seriously question everything. I have always second guessed everything people hand feed us. But this takes it to another level. The sad thing is that people are too set in their ways to even consider another possible scenario. I personally loved hearing Jason respond to the questions the class asked him. Any effort to discredit him was replied to in a thought out response, provong to me that he wasn't full of it but he had really done his research and whole heartedly believed in what he was saying."

I consider myself an atheist, or better yet, a free-thinker, so the following statements should be read with that in mind. The positive reviews for this book are overblown. It is poorly written and really could have been improved with some proof reading. Continually writing things like "could of" instead of "could have" is amateurish. It takes away from being taken too seriously. Also, some of the author's arguments were either poorly expressed or lacked substance (and again, you could label me an atheist). So though I agree that religion is false, I can't really recommend this book as representative of my views.

The best part was the Bonus section titled: Logical Fallacies to Spot While Debating.

The book is not all bad, but considering the hefty price and my above critique, I'd just as soon get my money back.

This review is from: A Call to Sanity: The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God from a Rational Atheistic Perspective (Paperback)
My book just arrived! I just finished Chapter 1, I like it so far. It's all I want to read right now, but I have classes too, so it might take me a little while to finish it. I'm telling people about the book and the website (acalltosanity.com). I also think the glossary at the end of the book was a great idea, it helps me out. good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, June 11, 2006
This review is from: A Call to Sanity: The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God from a Rational Atheistic Perspective (Paperback)
Hi, I'm 17, and I've read this book 3 times, working on my fourth time. While I agree with MOST of the statements in the book, I wish it touched a little more on more "deistic ideas".

When I say a God, I don't mean the one who wrote the scriptures and tells you how to live and what is "right" and "wrong", but simply some sort of creator on a larger scale, it was somewhat touched on in A Call To Sanity at the mention of the clockmaker "theory".

In other news, I really enjoyed the book, keep up the good work!

3.0 out of 5 stars Right Ideas Poor Execution, January 25, 2011

A Call to Sanity:The Collision Between the Existence of God and the Non-Existence of God... by Jason Scott Yeldell

A Call to Sanity by Jason Scott Yeldell is an ambitious book that gives answers and counter arguments to questions of nonbelief. The book's main focus is to provide an atheist's view on those topics of religious interest. The book is composed of following eighteen chapters: 1. In the Beginning...., 2. The Origins, 3.The Purpose of Life, 4. The After Life, 5. Dealing With Life's Ups and Downs, 6. Miracles and Acts of a God, 7. The Conscious and Morality, 8. Human Emotion, 9. Love, 10. Fate, Destiny and Expiration Dates, 11. Prayer, 12. Spirits, Souls and the Paranormal, 13. Religious Holidays, Symbolism and Rituals, 14. The Religious Trap, 15. Religion and Sexism, 16. Scientific Research, 17. The Reason Behind it All, 18. Bonus Section: Logical Fallacies.

Positives:
1. Direct and very easy book to follow.
2. Covers many interesting topics.
3. Interesting tidbits about Holidays.
4. Good logical conclusions.
5. Good use of refreshers.
6. Counter Arguments throughout, thank you.
7. Plenty of water fountain material.
8. Excellent Bonus Section on Logical Fallacies, the strongest part of the book.
9. Can be read in a short amount of time.
10. Good introductory book on Atheism.

Negatives:
1. In desperate need of an editor.
2. Too basic of a book. Poorly researched despite the fact that I agree with most of the author's conclusions.
3. Poor writing style. A lot of good thoughts but lacking in style and ability to engage the reader.
4. Poorly formatted book. Too much unused space...
5. Too many exclamation points.
6. Too few references. It felt like a college paper instead of a book.
7. Not the caliber of book I was hoping for. So many great topics, but just glanced over.
8. Overall disappointed.

In summary, A Call to Sanity by Jason Scott Yeldell is a mixed bag. It covers many interesting topics but does so with little substance. However, the author has good potential. I agree with most if not all of his conclusions but differ in the way he engages his topics. I was really disappointed with the lack of references. All the topics deserved more scientific support and the book is in desperate need of an editor. There are much better books that cover the same topics: "Sense and Goodness Without God" by Richard Carrier, "Godless" by Dan Barker, "Atheist Universe" by David Mills, "50 Reasons People Give for Believing in a God" by Guy P. Harrison, "The Moral Landscape" by Sam Harris, "Christian No More" by Jeffrey Mark, "Why I Became an Atheist" by John Loftus, "The God Virus" by Darrel Ray, "The New Atheism" by Victor Stenger and not to mention books from Dawkins, Hitchens and Dennett.
