Fascinating Stories of the Sea,

This review is from: The Call of the Sea: The Lost Sea, The Distant Shore, and A Sailor's Life (Hardcover)
Writing from long experience as a merchant sailor himself, Jan de Hartog combines a delightfully dry sense of humor with a deep knowledge and respect for the sea and for those who earn their living thereon. His plots flow naturally in English - at times almost lyrically - despite the fact that his first language was Dutch. Some of his characterizations made my wife break out in laughter. This and several others of his books should be considered classics well worth reading by any generation.

Hartog is the best. His stories of the sea are totally realistic because he has lived them, and beautifully written because he was one of the world's best writers. He has a way of developing characters that is unmatched, and his stories are absolutely realistic and believable because he has experience them or known the people who have. I have read nearly every book he has written and have never, ever been disappointed.
