From the Publisher

An excellent book designed specifically for CFS sufferers, from format to information!

From the Author

I never meant to write a book when my midnight muse came to me, yet I was in its grips and the words and messages had me transfixed. It was 1999, and I had no life. After years of searching for the right career and finally arriving, I was on the road to becoming to a psychotherapist. That's when a fatigue so thick, so all encompassing enveloped me and drove me from my path onto an unexpected, unwanted, new one. It was CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). That's when CFS became my life, robbing me of everything: my abilities, career, relationships-- everything I knew to be me. And as it took over, so too did a midnight muse that woke me in the wee hours with messages of hope and inspiration.

As the muse kept me from sleeping, it also inspired in me what no other CFS book, person, or website could. It gave me the belief in my ability to heal; it gave me the drive to heal. It gave me the knowing I would get better; I could get better, and that where I was wasn't all bad. It showed me that I could heal myself! It taught me that I was my own best healer. I could accept my illness, even embrace it, all the while fighting and working to get better. And, so I did.

This muse (and now this book, Call For Soulwork), which came from somewhere deep within me or without me, I'm not sure, told me that CFS was my teacher. That the isolation was real, but could be broken through spiritual connection, connection to self and nature. It acknowledged my deep loneliness, the pain of broken relations and miscommunications, and my inability to be social. It acknowledged the raw fear, isolation, and despair inherent in CFS. And it showed me more; it brought me to another part of myself and another aspect of the illness. Through my illness, and with the help of my muse, subsequent spiritual journey, and this book, I began to find meaning and acceptance of where I was. Yet, I also fought to be healthier, and slowly, progressively, I healed!

CFS is a Call For Soulwork helped me heal! I wrote it when I was ill, but on the path to recovery. I wrote it from the depths of darkness, and over time it helped guide me toward wellness.

CFS is a Call For Soulwork is not about a cure, or how to heal physically (though it addresses this), rather, its about learning to see the messenger and blessings in illness so you can get better. It's about realizing your power to heal and how to be well even while being ill.

Without this book, I don't know if I ever would have recovered. Yet I did, and I have been healed for over five years now!  My book, this book, helped me heal.  And, I believe it can help you heal too.

May you be blessed on your healing journey! Gretchen

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for anyone with a Chronic Illness, July 2, 2006

This review is from: CFS is a Call For Soulwork (Paperback)
This is a wonderfully moving, informative, and inspirational book. The author does a great job providing thoughtful, well-researched information combined with a deeply personal story of her search for healing. She calls upon us to use the experience of chronic illness to uncover the essence of our being - to love yourself despite the confines and challenges of everyday life. I was moved to follow her advice, wisdom, and leadership to follow my own path to healing. I heartily recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift of a book!, August 25, 2005
By
This review is from: CFS is a Call For Soulwork (Paperback)
I love Gretchen's book! I've struggled with CFS for almost 8 years, unable to work or do much of anything. Coming upon Gretchen's book was such a wonderful surprise! She understands the CFS lonely path and the very complicated dynamics involved in trying to get well. Instead of giving me one more cure (how many times have we CFSers heard that!), she gently opens up her own life and experience to us to show how CFS has transformed from the enemy to her closest friend. CFS has given her life back to her in ways she never knew she was missing, even prior to her CFS! Gretchen opens up a different path for us to explore for ourselves, not someone else's path we must try and imitate.
And in following my own path, I too am finding the gifts that she talks about. In 8 years of CFS, I have never found a book that is so helpful on so many levels, and I'm recommending it not only to fellow CFSers, but to any family member or practioner who helps people deal with CFS or any chronic illness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh approach to CFS, January 9, 2006
This review is from: CFS is a Call For Soulwork (Paperback)
Gretchen Nassar's Call for Soulwork is a forthright approach to dealing with CFS and a host of other related conditions. It goes beyond the medical/physical aspects of CFS and into the emotional/psychological/stress-related aspects. There are no simple solutions to CFS, but this book is a honest look of how fear and stress can seriously affect your life.
