4.0 out of 5 stars Superior flash fiction, June 20, 2008

This review is from: I Call This Flirting. (Paperback)
Sherrie Flick should definitely be better known. In this, her first collection, her keen wit and sharp insights fuse with a beautiful terseness of style that is a marvel to read. Flash fiction--from 100 to 1,000 words--is definitely her forte and as an indicator of her huge talent, pieces from this collection have been anthologized in You Have Time For This (a recent flash fiction anthology) and The Mammoth Book of Sudden Stories (another flash fiction anthology from 2003).

She's very smart and at the same time very sensitive to how people do what they do and, at least some of the time, why. This comes out in subtle and often surreal ways. In "Nebraska Men" (she's from Nebraska) the opening line characterizing the title characters as a group putting seashells in their mouths is startling and also gripping. You can't help but keep reading. In "Back", the title character describes what happens when her clock starts running backwards in the context of her relationship with her boyfriend. The convergence of the universal and the personal is done with real panache here--very fine indeed.

It would be great to see another collection from Ms. Flick!

Definitely recommended.
