5.0 out of 5 stars The Call that could Kill, November 30, 2000
This review is from: Call Waiting (Point Horror Series) (Paperback)
Call Waiting The most intriguing yet creepy book I've ever read is Call waiting. From the moment I picked it up I knew it was going to be scary by the blood on the phone receiver on the cover of the book. I opened it and read the first line which said, "The frightening phone calls began less than an hour after Karen," a teenager who was skinny, had dark hair, and dark eyes, "had the fight with Ethan," her boyfriend. At that time I knew it was going to be scary. As I read on it stated the tone of the book. "One week before the fight, on a snowy, bone-chilling, Saturday night, Karen Masters pulled her blue Corolla onto Jefferson, Ethan's street. The tires crunched over the salted pavement as Karen eased on the curb and cut the headlights." It immediately sent chills down my spine. I think the scariest part of the book was when Karen actually got the real phone calls. "Leave me alone! Do your hear me?" Karen cried angrily. " But I'm inside your brain Karen," the frightening voice rasped. " I can't leave you alone. I'm going to kill you. Maybe tonight." I was shocked at the next part when it said, "Karen started to cry out again-but she muffled herself when she heard the sound. A sound behind the rasping voice. One sound. Karen listened to the sound. Heard it again clearly. And knew who the caller was." Trust me the caller really isn't who you think. To find out whom the caller is you will have to read the book. Believe me this book really kept me wanting to read more. I would highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Day To Day To Die For, April 12, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Call Waiting (Point Horror Series) (Paperback)
Call Waiting by R.L. Stine; Scholastic: New York, 1994. ISBN: 0-590-4780-4

Have you ever been betrayed by someone before? Well, Karen, the main character, gets betrayed by someone really close to her in Call Waiting. This is a mystery book written by R.L. Stine.
The book Call Waiting is about a girl named Karen who is dating a guy named Ethan. She suspects that her boyfriend is cheating and lying to her. Also, they stopped hanging out. Then Karen starts getting creepy phone calls saying that they are going to kill her. Everyone thinks that she is making that up so she can get Ethan's attention. So is Karen lying or telling the truth that they are going to kill her?The theme in Call Waiting is that there is always going to be somebody who is going to betray you.
I recommend Call Waiting to people who like mystery books. The reason why is because you don't know what's going to happen next. The author tries to confuse you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Call Waiting-by R.L Stine, August 3, 2002
This review is from: Call Waiting (Point Horror Series) (Paperback)
Call Waiting is an extreme book about a teenager named Karen who starts realizing that her boyfriend is spending less time with her. Scared that she will lose her boyfriend Karen starts spying on him. She then figures out that her boyfriend is going out with another girl. To make Karen's boyfriend love her again she makes up that she gets terrible calls in the middle of the night. The calls say...someone will kill Karen. However it was all a lie and Ethen (Karen's boyfriend) believed it. Soon as you might of guessed, Karen's boyfriend found out, but he wasn't mad. The bad thing is as soon as Karen started going back out with Ethen she started getting calls that would kill her......but this time it was true!!!

Call Waiting is a great book, that everyone would love. If you enjoyed R.l Stines other young adults books then I recommend you this one. Read it!!!! You can't put it down!!! 5 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing story with an annoying character!, December 26, 2009

Synopsis: Karen Masters thinks her boyfriend Ethan Parker is cheating on her with Wendy Talbot. Micah Davis, her best friend thinks Karen is overreacting and tells her not to worry about it. Karen's cousin, Adam comes back to town and acts very strangely. Ethan seems reserved and tries to avoid Karen. Ethan's friend Jake doesn't like her either. In a desperate attempt to keep Ethan, Karen pretends to receive threatening phone calls so that Ethan can come to her rescue. However, later Karen really starts getting threatening phone calls from someone who hates her. Can she find out who is putting her life in danger before it's too late?

(I cannot be more specific about the synopsis because the plot keeps changing in the book)

Review: Ugh, where do I begin? This book was atrocious! The main reason I disliked it so much was because of Karen's character. Let's see, this girl stalks her boyfriend, is obsessed with him, has sudden flashes of rage, doesn't even know if she pushed a girl to her death or not, throws temper tantrums at everyone, lies to everyone one minute, gets caught, and wants to go to the dance club the next minute, thinks her cousin is weird for hearing voices but doesn't find it weird when she hears them voices a broken phone, and WE are supposed to root for her? Give me a break!

Even the writing was horrible. I felt the actually story started in the last 50 pages of the book, when Karen actually starts receiving the phone calls. Also, every time someone like Ethan, Micah, Wendy etc. gave her an explanation as to their strange behavior, Karen kept wondering, `are they telling the truth, or lying to me'? This started becoming repetitious and confusing throughout the book, to the point where I felt that I didn't even know what was true anymore.

I don't even know what the point of Adam's character in the book was!

Even though the ending made sense (well at least I think it did; I didn't bother looking back at the story to see if there were any loopholes), I felt frustrated because the one character I remotely liked in the book turned out to be the psycho.

But, there were some parts I enjoyed in the book, such as anytime someone like Chris scared Karen, or when she received threatening phone calls from a broken phone in school. It was fun seeing her actually squirm for awhile.

I really think I would have enjoyed the book better if Stine hadn't written Karen so badly.

Call Waiting

Call Waiting is a very exciting book with a lot of suspense that will keep you guessing and wanting more throughout the book. It is about a girl who feels she is losing her boyfriend, so she lies to him that she is about to be killed but it all turned into a reality when her friend tries to kill her but she is saved. I think it was good except for one thing. There is no massive murder.
I would recommend this to people who like books with a lot of suspense and like a very interesting plot line where you will want to keep reading. This book is good for people of all ages but there is no massive murder like (Beach House)

Call Waiting wasn't my favorite R.L.Stine book, but it was still a pretty good book.I gave it 4 stars because I've read better ones by him.The ending is really worth the read though.I couldn't believe the person who did it was someone,so close to her.It wasn't the greatest, but I still recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Phone trouble, February 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Call Waiting (Point Horror Series) (Paperback)
Karen suspects that her boyfriend Ethan is losing interest in her, and that he would rather be with Wendy, the most popular girl in school. The suspicion is driving her nuts.
Then the threatening phone calls begin. Are they jokes or is someone after her? Or is she losing it?

I found this book disappointing. It didn't captivate me.
