The Call of the Wild
By: Jack London A book review If you like stories about sled dogs driving people to Alaska, then you would probably want to read this book. The people were going to Alaska because they wanted to find gold. Along the way there were challenges and adventures. First Buck, a St. Bernard-Scotch Shepard, was kidnapped from his cozy home in California and taken to the frozen north in Alaska. When he was in Alaska he became a sled dog. Next, Buck had many battles with different dogs. Buck made himself a lead dog. I like this book The Call of the Wild because it had many action scenes. The reason why I like the action scenes there were fights and adventures. Another reason I like this book because I learned about many types of dogs. I learned that dogs can pull sleds. I also learned that dogs can have fights. The last thing I liked about the book was that the author wrote captions under the illustrations. I liked that because it tells you what is happening. In conclusion, I would recommend this book because it is a great action/adventure book about a St. Bernard-Scotch Shepard named Buck. This book is also great because I like dogs and they are my favorite pets. If you enjoy reading about dogs then you will love this book as well.

Buck realizes his potential,

This review is from: Call of the Wild (Great Illustrated Classics (Abdo)) (Library Binding)
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential.
Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild. This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild. The Call of the Wild - Dog of the Yukon (1997)

The book "the call of the wild" is based on a dog called Buck who is kidnapped. In the beginning of the story, the gardener of Bucks master hears that people will pay money for dogs. So he kidnaps Buck and trades him for money. Buck escapes and lives with a pack of wolves. Later on, Buck escapes and meets a man called John Thornton and stays with him. He soon starts to run into the forest for no reason every day longer each time. Then he stays and lives in the forest until the end of his very old days.My favorite part was when Buck was kidnapped. This happened in the beginning. A man called Manuel was hired by Judge Miller, Bucks first owner. Manuel heard that people were willing to pay people for dogs with long, thick, warm fur. This is because people had discovered gold in the Arctic. Manuel then kidnapped Buck and traded him for money. This started him on a great adventure that would turn Buck from a tame dog to a wild wolf. I chose to read this book because, I like fantasy stories. The book reveals a story of a kidnapped wolf, from the dog's point of view. It explains how he thought people were, and how he was really treated. I also chose to read this book because it is a great classic.

Call of the Wild made kid-friendly,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Call of the Wild (Great Illustrated Classics) (Hardcover)
Want to wean kids off television with a great classic? For kids 9-12 this book should do the trick. Jack London's story of a family pet who becomes a sled dog in Alaska gets heavily edited and simplified by a very competent editor. An illustration on every other page keeps even the most reluctant young readers on track. I'm an elementary school librarian who is reading this book aloud with five classes of 5th and 6th grade students and they love it! (The only reason I didn't give this book a full five stars is that the longer, orginal version is still the best--if you are a more mature and patient reader.)

A Wild Story's Review,
This review is from: The Call of the Wild (Great Illustrated Classics) (Hardcover)
The Call of The Wild is about a strapping dog named Buck. Buck learns in an unexpected adventure how to beat the best and earn respect of all that he came in contact with, but many times this goal was brutal to achive, making the story full of action and suspense. Through his travels, and not knowing where his next step would lead him, Buck answers his call to the wild. I personally enjoyed the whole story even though it's written for a much younger age. The most captivating parts were when Buck outsmarted the smartest dogs and some of the most ridiculously obstinate men. This ability allowed him to move up in his leadership role and make himself infamous. I recommend this book for all to read. The young and old! |
