Callan is a very gritty police drama that ran on ATV in 4 series in England in 1967, 1969, 1970, and 1972, with a follow-up movie in 1974, and a reunion show in 1981. This is the 3rd series, from 1970 (9 episodes), and the first to wear the Thames Colour banner. Hopefully the two black and white series from the sixties will be out at some point, as they'd give better background to the characters we see here. The 4th series is also available from Umbrella Entertainment.

In an interview with Edward Woodward (Callan) that's included, he said the series was compared to James Bond, but Callan is in much more of a pressure cooker, the environment is far bleaker, and the characters closer to the ground. The writing and acting are superb, and as a viewer, you are under the gun during the hour, and really drawn into the plots.
