This review is from: Callas: The Art and the Life - The Great Years (Hardcover)
There are quite a handful of Callas picture books, The Scala Years, Images of a Legend... this one by John Ardoin is the best. This Callas picture book starts with a great long essay by John Ardoin, a very impressive piece of writing on Callas and bel canto, the rest of the book a description of Callas' preparation and interpretations of all her famous roles - with amazing picture accompaniment. The book also ends with a chronological timeline of all of Callas' performances and recording sessions. A great treasure for any Callas fan.

The John Ardoin essay is only a small part of what is really a picture essay, but it is one of the finest pieces of writing about Callas you will ever find. Ardoin knew and admired Callas and she confided in him. His writing is perceptive and fair. Without overlooking Callas' flaws he gives ample evidence of why she mattered and still matters to anyone who loves and understands opera. Buy it!
