Definite!,

This review is from: Callas Edition Live - Verdi: Aida, Covent Garden, London 1953 / Barbirolli, Callas, Baum, Simionato, et al (Audio CD)
A perfect performance between the WILD Aidas from Mexico and her subtle studio-Aida. Here there is no wobble at all, she sounds passionate, wild, tender, suffering..... A MUST-Recording for Callas-fans and those who love the art of singing! Buy it! You won't be disappointed.P.S. Remember this is live, so the sound is not perfect. But it's not as disturbing as the Mexico-performances.

Norma?,

I would love and explanation on how this is like Norma?
Ridiculous. Callas would have blown Price off the stage. The power, range, and intensity of the the voice during this period of her career was unmatched. Leontyne was great, but she did not have the instrument that Callas had ie. the voice is sometimes airy, lacking "ring" and has too much pitch oscilation in the vibrato. Unfortunately, Callas had a great decline, but at her best she is hard to beat.

Verdi would have been furious with Callas's interpretation of Aida, trying to turn her into a Norma. The best Aida is Price/Vickers hands down. |
