The 150th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Puccini is upon us, and to celebrate, we welcome this sprawling set starring one of his greatest interpreters. You'll find yourself seated in the hallowed hall of La Scala in Milan for most of these, with the exception of the second Tosca , which was recorded in Paris. In addition to every Puccini recording Callas made, you'll hear the famous recital of Puccini arias that she gave in London in '54 and her 1964 comeback performance of Tosca at Covent Garden (under the direction of Franco Zeffirelli). But front and center are Maria's treasured studio recordings of the Puccini operas Manon Lescaut; La Boheme; Tosca; Madama Butterfly , and Turandot . Magnificent!

It's a nice collection to have if you already know the opera and just want to listen. The box contains some of Callas' greatest recordings with a booklet explaining what went on with her life at the time. However, if you want to really enjoy each opera, it doesn't provide enough information about the opera. It would have been great if it contained the translation of the entire opera even if it cost more.
