Book Description

Universe of Stars October 15, 1999
Throughout the 1950s, Maria Callas was the leading star of the international opera circuit and arguably the most flamboyant, most sought-after performer in the world. With the unrivaled quality of her opulent voice and her much-publicized personal exploits, she became an international sensation. Ultimately, she was the most transformative force in twentieth-century opera: largely due to "La Callas," opera evolved from a fashionable pastime into a popular obsession. Born in America in 1923 to recent Greek immigrants (without a drop of Italian blood), she was an unlikely future diva. As a child she was myopic, chubby, and spoke in the unrefined accent of her native New York. In 1937 her mother returned with her to Greece, where she began her studies at the Athens Conservatory and made her debut at the Athens Opera. Driven and passionate, by 1949 she was already recognized internationally as an original interpreter of the Italian bel-canto repertory. Maria Callas's rise was meteoric, and her demise seemed just as abrupt. Through the triumphs, and often self-imposed miseries of her life, she burned with the passions of a true prima donna.

Maria Callas revolutionized the art of opera, influencing repertoire and singing style more than any artist this century. This book pays homage to this extraordinary diva through an enlightening text and a series of stunning photographs which capture "La Callas" in her most famous roles, at rehearsals, at recordings, and with adoring fans. We follow her first performance of Bellini's Norma at the tender age of nineteen, through the highlights of her career in the late 1950s, and her triumphant performances of opera's greatest heroines. Yet behind the success lies a more haunting story. The great star's destiny echoed that of the tragic heroines she so often portrayed: she lived her roles, both on and off the stage, so intensely that she was devoured by them, both physically and emotionally. She spent her final years in silence and solitude, unaware of the great legacy she would leave, or of the dazzling legend that she had become.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

It's hard to believe there's a whole new generation of opera lovers who have come of age with little acquaintance with the unparalleled art of Maria Callas. This singer was a key catalyzing element in the postwar renaissance of fascination with opera's possibilities--musical and dramatic--that continues into the present. Of course, the techniques of "mechanical reproduction" can only hint at the unique aura that this icon--known to her admirers as "La Divina"--possessed. But no opera lover should be without at least some examples of her recorded legacy, say in such signature roles as Tosca, Norma, or Violetta in La Traviata. As for that other crucial aspect of the Callas aura--her mesmerizing stage presence--this attractively produced book offers a tantalizing hint, whether for the longtime Callas fanatic or the budding operaphile. Copublished by the Vendome Press (which is also the source for the lavishly illustrated coffee-table tribute to the great tenors), La Callas is essentially a visual essay comprising 40-plus black-and-white photographs. We see the artist backstage, in her private life, and wearing the masks of several of her great roles. When Callas becomes the medium for one of these character interpretations--Medea, Lucia, Butterfly--the utter transformation registered by the camera is still transfixing. Introducing the photographs is a short but notionally rich essay by French music critic André Tubeuf, consisting of a thumbnail sketch of Callas's life and some thoughtful musings on the significance of her fame. Those seeking an in-depth assessment of Callas's legacy will do well by John Ardoin's well-regarded The Callas Legacy; thecontroversial biography by Stelios Galatopoulos should also be of interest. --Thomas May

This review is from: La Callas (Universe of Stars) (Hardcover)
Maria Callas (1923-1977) achieved a level of greatness as a soprano that perhaps no one else has achieved; it was so much more than her voice, it was her presence, her grace, her sense of drama, and her strength of character. It was also the rigorous training she put herself through, and as this wonderful book describes, she was one to arrive early and leave late, even when she was an operatic superstar.

Written in an almost poetic style, French music critic André Tubeuf talks briefly about her youth, when she was considered an "ugly duckling" and her older sister (ironically named Jackie) was the pretty one. Maria was myopic, and "stuffed herself with sweets," which led to her having a "substantial figure." One can hardly imagine this, as the vision in our minds of Callas is of a svelte and fashionable woman, but there are 2 gorgeous photographs in this book that prove that in her early days she was quite Rubinesque, and quite a beauty.

Callas was at her peak in the 1950s, when her best recordings were made, making music that is treasured today, and for all time. Tubeauf covers this period, and then tells of how her fame, and her long relationship with Ari Onassis (who cast her aside for a bigger trophy, the widow of a president), led to her final years of isolation. Tubeauf compares her stardom that rose to mythical proportions to Garbo and Monroe, and says, "Callas was first devoured by art and then the woman was destroyed by the fires of celebrity."

There are only 14 pages of text in this book, the bulk of it consists of fabulous photos, in and out of costume, with some that are most unusual, like one of her conversing with Winston Churchill, aboard Onassis' yacht. There is always sadness behind the glamour in these images of an "ugly duckling" that became one of the world's most famous swans. The photographs are not interrupted by descriptions, these come at the end of the book, next to thumbnails of them, and there is also a chronology that is helpful for those wanting to learn more about La Divina Callas. This is a small book, but it has the quality of a coffee table volume, with thick, glossy pages, and sturdy construction, and is a must for opera and Callas fans.
