5.0 out of 5 stars Rivals the ProV1
Extremely good feel and incredible distance. In these two aspects I prefer this ball over all the Titlist balls. The only issue with Callaway Hx Hot Bite is its durability. As long as you don't abuse Callaway balls they will outlast the Titlist brand. You can abuse the ProV1 (bounce it on cartpaths/rocks) and it will still last reasonably long. However Callaway Balls...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for around the green but...
I had been looking for a ball that would give me good "touch" around the greens. Since I'm not a terribly long hitter, I wasn't concerned with max distance. This ball delivers on most counts. It's good off the tee, distance is pretty typical for me, possibly a tad longer, but 3 or 4 yards max. Long iron shots seem to get up and go well, with good roll out on low...

However Callaway Balls are not built for this kind of endurance, they are built for no other reason than hitting off the tee and on fairways/out of rough and especially around the green.

THIS IS THE BEST BALL I HAVE EVER USED AROUND AND ON THE GREEN!
It also added 10 yards to my drive out the ProV1.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest balls I've ever played!, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Callaway HX Hot Bite Golf Balls (12-Pack) (Sports)
This ball feels good off the tee and goes very long, but it is brilliant around the greens. If you are a good chipper, it is responsive to your touch and will always be around the hole. It's hard to describe, but some cheap balls feel like rocks when you hit them, these Hot Bites feel like velvet. The Green V on them makes them unique too. Cool!

Decent ball for the price. Has soft feel and seems to stop well enough on hard, fast greens. Would buy again.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best balls for under $30 a dozen, October 23, 2009

I admit it...I have been spoiled, having played the BEN HOGAN golf balls on clearance before Callaway Golf made them disappear. Those were some nice rocks, son...for $45/dozen, if you can find them. (PS, I think they are called Callaway Tour iX's now.) Well, I'll tell you whut...if you are budget conscious, the Hot Bite deserves a try. You can crush these and they will fly straight. I swing a stiff shaft at about 96mph...they "click" and I can roll them up to 260 yards, long enough to make my golf buddies grumble.

Now, when you get close to the green, the soft cover gives you some feel and ability to spin/stop them on the "dance floor" with a wedge; a big need fulfilled for me. The rub is that they scuff easily and have to go into the shag bag after that. Look, I'm still getting used to putting Hot Bites, since they have some give, but I know the right tempo is my job. Overall, I'm pleased for a 20+ handicapper...I picked up the game late in life, so I stick with what works.

I am an 18 handicap. I've tried almost every ball on the market. This is as good as any of them from my perspective including balls that cost twice as much.

Long iron shots seem to get up and go well, with good roll out on low trajectory shots, and good stopping power when needed. Where this ball absolutely shines is 125 yards and in. Feels like absolute butter off my pitching wedge. Great spin and will stop on a dime. Able to draw and fade at will, and will react appropriately (rolling in the desired direction after landing) on the green. Where this ball fails miserably is in putting. Somehow, even though it has an amazing feel off my wedges, it feels like I'm hitting a glass marble with my putter. It zings off the face like a ricochet, and delivers zero "touch" at least for me. It was so bad I started to flinch on the start of my putting stroke as I was so concerned with the inevitable "clack".
I guess the designers figured this ball was so good off wedges that no one would ever need to putt it.
Not recommended for anyone but Phil Mikelson.

2.0 out of 5 stars Often on sale, but balls not durable, January 3, 2012
This review is from: Callaway HX Hot Bite Golf Balls (12-Pack) (Sports)
I've played with a few boxes of these balls and the other similarly priced Callaway balls. They play well, but the exterior cover gets scuffed way too easily. In some cases, I find that a ball is messed up even after a single hole. I usually just rip the loose pieces off, but it defeats the purpose of trying to play with a consistent ball. I've read similar reviews stating the same issue - I'm not sure if it's the way I'm hitting the ball (I hit it pretty high), but don't have the same issue with other balls.
