Book Description

June 1, 2009 Severn House Large Print
Post civil war Ireland, 1924 - Rose Hamiltons granddaughter, Rosie, is growing into a lovely young woman but her life is blighted by her mothers violence. A trip to Kerry, in the company of her grandparents, seems the perfect escape. For Rosie, this is an eye-opening adventure and the first step into adult life in an Ireland that has been torn apart, first by the British and then by a fierce civil war.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Doughty continues the saga of the Hamiltons of Ballydown, Ireland. Set in the 1920s, this installment centers on Rosie, daughter of Sam Hamilton and his wife, Martha. After attending finishing school, a luxury no one else in her large family had, 16-year-old Rosie is at loose ends. She works tirelessly on her family’s farm but doesn’t have much hope for the future. With times as tough as they are, her only chance at a job is working as a housekeeper in one of the large homes in the area, something she dreads doing. Her mother constantly berates her, and one day, after a vicious beating, her father finally steps in. Rosie is to spend some time with her grandparents. They, in turn, take a long-awaited trip to Kerry. As she resumes her life at the farm, she continues to search for some direction. Slowly Rosie’s world opens up in ways she never could have imagined in this compelling and sweet tale of self-discovery. --Maria Hatton --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.
