4.0 out of 5 stars Callendar Papers, December 2, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Callender Papers (Turtleback)
The Callender Papers by Cynthia Voigt is a good book because it has an understandable plot and many wonderful characters. I would love to recommend this book, it is a great mystery for kids, but I do have my problems with it. The main character is Jean Wainwright, she live with her Aunt Constance, and is asked by a friend to organize his wife's papers, who passed away. Jean soon begins to wonder if his wife actually died of natural causes.

The Callender Papers has a wonderful plot. It is very easy to follow and understanding, oh, this is my problem. You have to be extremely patient because the action of the book doesn't kick in until the end, in other words, its slow up until the end.

I love the different personalities in this book. For example, Ms. Bywall and Aunt Constance both give wonderful advice to Jean, but have very different lives and personalities. Aunt Constance is ahead mistress of a girls boarding school, and can be stern, gentle and wise. On the other hand Ms. Bywall is a maid for Mr. Theil. She cares very much about her family, and is very thoughtful and caring.

So, if you can put up with the first two hundred pages being quite slow, the benefit comes at the end of the story, to be a four star book.

Out of the many books I've read I think that The Callender Papers is one of the most incrdible books. However, the author uses forshadowing quite a bit which makes the ending predictable. The authors style of writing pulls the reader in with vivid descriptions of 19th century Massachusetts. It also has a number of complex characters whose pasts' are revealed through a series of family papers. Overall I think the Callender Papers was a wonderful book!
