Book Description

January 11, 1991
A fully annotated, bilingual edition, Calligrammes is a key work not only in Apollinaire's own development but also in the evolution of modern French poetry. Apollinaire--Roman by birth, Polish by name (Wilhelm-Apollinaris de Kostrowitski), Parisian by choice--died at thirty-eight in 1918. Nevertheless, he became one of the leading figures in twentieth-century poetry, a transitional figure whose work at once echoes the Symbolists and anticipates the work of the Surrealists.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Any study, any appreciation, not only of French poetry early in our century but of French painting -- Picasso, the Cubists, Delauney (and of Apollinaire's personal vision can begin with this excellent book." (The Antioch Review

"Greet's English is an excellent guide to Apollinaire's French. A modern classic long overdue in this form." -- Kenneth Funsten, Los Angeles Times Book Review

"This impressive edition presenting the original French texts facing the English translations deserves high praise on numerous counts. The successful duplication in English of the complex typography of these word-drawings is in itself a feat. . . . The enduring value of this edition will derive from its completeness and the tools it offers the competent but inexpert reader of French for fuller understanding of Apollinaire's rich, but often abstruse vocabulary and imagery." -- Choice

This book is amazing. After reading this it quickly became my favorite poetry book. I ordered all his other books shortly after that including the plays, the art critiques, the other poetry books, the short erotic novels and the short stories. Very fascinated with all things Apollinaire. But, this is my favorite and not just because it was my first. It's a revolution in poetry. Accessible, experimental, charming and very, very creative. I now think differently and I like it. Thank you, Guillame.

5.0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece, February 12, 2006
This work is nothing short of a masterpiece.

If you're just being introduced to poetry or Guillaume Apollinaire, this is a must-read. I can't even begin to describe the depth and meaning found in every word of this book.

The only complaint I have is that the translations were not always accurate, but with a book of this size, there are inevitably going to be small translation errors.

Read it! It will change your life.
