1.0 out of 5 stars Not for Kindle
I just bought this on my kindle. BIG mistake. While the writing is clear and concise the worksheets are complete unavailable. I tried working with the "For Dummies" website and the authors website without any success. At the authors websites he just wanted to sell me the pages. NO THANKS!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Calligraphy For Dummies (Paperback)
I just wanted to say that I recently purchased this book and am pleased with it. The book has a nice structure to it and helps walk me through everything from getting the tools of the trade, to building my confidence. For someone with my complete lack of experience, this book was exactly what I needed. Some of the other books I've found have been somewhat slim on explanation, or a poor choice for a tutorial. While it doesn't have the full suite of letter forms inside it that others may have, it seems to have the major ones I'd like to start with, and is a great way to get started. I suspect that someone with experience already would find this book somewhat too basic.

I would have given this book five out of five, were it not for the fact that I really have nothing else to compare it to. As well as the fact that the pages are not really suited to practise on as they are of a newsprint type quality. For those who wish to begin with calligraphy, I suggest using this book to get started with without reservation.

Cheers,

t.

This book is great for the beginner who doesn't mind being seen with a book for Dummies. The explanations are clear and there is even help for the left handed calligrapher. The illustrations help a lot. Although there are some different fonts to work with the selection has been kept to the simpler types. It is a good way to get started with the art of beautiful writing.

It has little depth to it but for the beginner is quite good. Better than many beginner calligraphy books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy for Dummies was definitely for me, August 16, 2008
This review is from: Calligraphy For Dummies (Paperback)
This book was fantastic. It supplied all the information needed to begin calligraphy, including how to set up your lap board for an easier beginning writing experience. I really don't feel I would ever have been able to complete the projects without the help and guidance of this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the beginning stages of calligraphy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jim Bennett does it again!, February 11, 2009

"Calligraphy for Dummies" is excellent. The author, Jim Bennett, is not only a writer but also a teacher. The book makes an outstanding textbook--either for use by an individual or a group. Both the text and the illustrations are very clear and easy to understand. In my opinion, there's not another calligraphy book available that even comes close in information and clarity for a beginner in the ancient art of beautiful writing.

I bought this book for my 15 year old neice who was interested in learning caligraphy. After looking at many books, I selected this one because I knew she could skim pages and get the gist of what she needed to know. The book came in handy from the start--it showed her how to assemble the ink caligraphy pen I'd purchased and how to get the ink flowing after numerous attempts failed (the tip in the book worked). She liked that she could flip to pages, see an illustration of how to hold the pen and how to make simple strokes. She was pleased right away that she doing caligraphy. If I were trying to learn caligraphy (again) this is the book I'd want.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good start with Calligraphy, July 9, 2010

This review is from: Calligraphy For Dummies (Paperback)
Starting with no previous knowledge (and a very bad writting style), I got decent result in a few time.

You don't have to follow the order given by the book. For example, if you an get hold of a manuscript pen (it allows to use standard ink cartridges and is quite inexpensive), you may directly start with a calligraphy pen.

Italic is clean, fast but you'll probably want to jump fast to the gothic writting. although the book don't encourage it it's perfectly possible.

The last one (Copperplate) can be done before/after the other. Definitively a good book for beginners (and more advanced who want to learn Copperplate).

5.0 out of 5 stars Hate the title, love the book, January 29, 2012

This book has practice pages at the end to copy, which is why I didn't buy the Kindle version. It is the best affordable resource for copperplate & several other hands. It offers clear, easy to understand instructions. Just wish the series was titled differently.
