The album is a vocal and picking showcase for Lou Reid, whose mandolin prowess and high tenor have been one of the glories of bluegrass for decades. The rest of the quartet consists of Christy Reid (bass and vocals), Trevor Watson (banjo and baritone) and Shannon Slaughter (lead guitar and baritone). On this outing, there are additional appearances by several outstanding bluegrass musicians including Ron Stewart and Rob Ickes. The one and only Tony Rice offers lovely guitar work on Dennis Duff's beautiful song "Oh, Kentucky", while Mike Auldridge adds his Nashville-style pedal steel to "Big Old Red Guitar".
To me, Lou Reid & Carolina has always felt like a group of friends getting together to make some good, solid music. They are aided on "Home" by some of the strongest songs they've ever recorded. You'll be hard pressed to find one bad cut on this 10-song album, and it all flows as gently as a river on a warm summer day. The moods go from the upbeat, really fun "Carolina Moonshine Man" (which is also the first single), to the lovelorn ballad "Some Hearts" with Christy's outstanding vocal. "Big Old Red Guitar" mixes bluegrass and country for a solid finale.
If you know and love Lou Reid & Carolina already, then you haven't even read this review and you either own it or you're going to. If you don't know them, then I can't think of a better place to start than this record. "Callin' Me Back Home" is a keeper, for sure.
