Terrence Brewer definitely has a distinctive feel for jazz composition. His tunes have thoughtful designs that allow for the structure for his bandmates to play within the melody and allow the space for each one to have full expressive capasity during solos. As a musician, Brewer expresses the full palate of the electric semi-hollow body by utilizing chord progression that display the depth of the jazz guitar. All in all, this was a record that resonates beyond its last listen.

Although this recording lacked the clarity of Volume One, the licks were impressive and he maintained artistic consistency and growth throughout the recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calmly Confident, August 31, 2008

The simple photograph on the cover may be a little off-putting. Where does this young jazz guitarist get the gumption to look so damn calmly confident? Where's the loudness on the cover we expect to see in order to get our attention focused, if for a short while, on those new and (deservedly) unknown recording artists? Well, give this one a listen and you'll get a lesson. You'll know that he knows, and you'll be assured that he's assured of more than poise, but also knowledge, skill and ability (besides playing on all of the tracks, Brewer also composed all of the compositions, as well). It's a GS recording (that is, guaranteed satisfaction)!

Simply put, the best of Terrence Brewer's The Calling: Volume 2 sounds as polished and nuanced as recordings of the great jazz guitarist, Jim Hall. And all of Brewer's accompanying musicians (Eric Drake on saxophone [on 3 of the disc's seven tracks]; Wil Blades on Hammond B-3 Organ, and Derrek Phillips on Drums) complement Brewer beyond mere competency but with reliant professionalism and supportive strengths and standouts. The music they make together is as beautiful and entertaining as it is profound.

Perfect for a Sunday morning brunch with friends and family or a private, intimate jam session, one-on-one, late at night. Meditative or animated; cold water, bourbon, or sangria. Choose a mindset and accompanying poison, because this isn't. Enjoy it and see the world through its colors as visioned and laid-down by one of the San Francisco Bay Area's newest jazz treasures.
