Colonel Marcel Robicheau has spent 20+ years closeted in the military. When she retires, she and an acquaintance open an antique store in San Antonio, Texas. Several things do not ring true in this book; for instance, the first thing she does after retiring is to put rainbow stickers on her beemer. I would think that it would take more than a day to undo the 20 years discipline of being in the closet. Other things bothered me as well. She was madly in love with her best friend's lover, and valiantly stayed away from her for the longest time. But then she was over her immediately upon finding her best friend's other love interest intriguing. The book could also stand a good editor. There were misspelled words, words that were soooo overused, and instances where the writer and editor forgot what had been written a page earlier (for instance, Marcel was eating fajitas and on the next page, but at the same meal, she was eating tacos). Those are the kinds of things that detract from a book. . I'm still wondering where the title for the book came from, but that was the least of my problems with this book. This is a fluff piece that has little plot, characters that have potential, but who are not realized, and an ending so predictable that one wonders why one wasted the couple of hours it took to read the book.

Problems arise when the General's wife reappears and tries to interest Marcel in romance. Marcel is attracted to her friend, Crickets lover. Cricket is attracted to Marcel's mother, Roslin. Only Peggy Herring could take this mixed up affair and create an interesting and delightful book. My only regret is that I will have to wait a long time for another of Peggy's books.

This is a great depiction of the military background and characterization. I found calm to be intriguing, sensuous and fun. I loved the way Peggy used the innerdynamics of the story to create a fun and fulfilling read. I would receommend this book to any reader....I read all of the Bella Books releases and have never been disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick read, good moments, September 6, 2002

I read some of the previous reviews and agree with a few criticisms- but I did find the book pretty entertaining. It IS a very quick read, and the story starts with the Colonel retiring- so don't think you're going to get a lesbian military story here. No ma'am. But I liked the dialogue- which is really the only way you get to know the characters. And they come to life in their exchanges. I'd recommend this book as a quick, light read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Storm makes good reading, March 8, 2001
This review is from: Calm Before the Storm (Paperback)
The plot of this book flies around like a cue ball, ricocheting from one situation to another on an ever-changing table. The sex is hot and fun, which I think is the author's trademark. Marcel is a complicated character and rides the storm with a compelling tenacity, and if a few loose ends weren't tied up it was only a minor distraction. This books read fast, delivers real entertainment and many thigh-clenching moments. What's more to want?

4.0 out of 5 stars What a Tantalizingly Tangled Web..., April 2, 2006

Colonel Marcel Robicheaux is on the verge of retirement from the military when her life gets extremely interesting. Marcel's commanding officer's wife, Jordan, makes her attraction to Marcel well known and threatens to expose her as a lesbian. Marcel plays it straight until her retirement party and finally believes she has left Jordan behind.

After the party, things get even more interesting. As in Alice's chart on the L Word, everyone in Marcel's life seems connected in some way. First, Marcel believes she is in love with Amanda, her best friend's girlfriend. Amanda and Cricket have been together for a few years and Cricket seems restless. Cricket has had a crush on Marcel's mother for many years, and runs around on Amanda with other women. In fact, Cricket brings home Naomi -- a woman she's interested in, but pretends to hook up with Marcel. It seems Naomi actually IS interested in Marcel, not Cricket. However, Marcel's feelings for Amanda blind her to possibilities with Naomi.

Despite her infidelities, Cricket goes mad when she discovers Marcel and Amanda hooked up for a night. Amanda completely shuts the door on Marcel. Cricket, in her anger, makes a pass at Marcel's mother. Marcel opens her eyes to Naomi's interest.

Top everything off with a return visit by Jordan and a severe threat from her husband, and Herring delivers a great book that should not be missed.

A tangled web that is difficult to follow, but worth the try, 'Calm' is a great story that kept this reader alternatively on the edge of her seat and rolling on the floor with laughter. I'm impressed that Herring was able to keep the storylines organized and interesting. Highly recommended...

5.0 out of 5 stars Calm Before The Storm, February 5, 2003

The writer had a God given talent for the art of an author. She grabs you up out of the nice comfy chair you are sitting in and she hurls you into her writings. You have no choice but to ignore your surroundings and delve deep into the very souls of the characters. It was as if she knew our very desires and wishes that were deep in our souls where nobody had ever gone before. She dared to tap into that very being and take us to a place of desire and need. And then.... it ended. Making me wish there was an extension of the book. Whomever contracted with this author to write for them - needs many gold stars. She is AWESOME and I will continue to read her writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calm Before The Storm, June 9, 2005
This review is from: Calm Before the Storm (Paperback)
Again, Peggy J. Herring has written another winner. Love and waiting, hot romance, and true feelings. Life in the military. Watching what you say or do. Finding the Generals wife stalking her. Couldn't put the book down or turn the pages fast enough. Peggy writes true to life and I love that. Turns and twists through the book. I simply love peggy's writing.

The plot was ok in this book but she never went anywhere with it. It was cheesy in my opinion. If you can buy it used, it would make a good quick read I guess...don't pay full price tho.
