3.0 out of 5 stars Influential, though merely adequate
Although not nearly the solid audio concept it wants to be, this album manages to squeeze off a few tightly woven, guitar epics after the apathetic front end. While never achieving any sort of material I felt this band has garnered in reputation, this album does at it's best accentuate the band's better assets in displaying their mogwai-esque habits. Although this band...

the first time michael gira (singer/songwriter of SWANS)heard windsor for the derby, he was taken aback, not only by the shimmering, passionate quality of the music, but by the dark intensity these guys reach, all while using clean guitars. that alone should irk your interest...a man who has stood less than three feet from the most monstrous noise in the history of new york for hours at a time, day after day, a man who has spent about 15 years of his life slowly damaging himself, becoming numb to things that would sicken most people. (if you dont know what im talking about, read theConsumer)But for a band to have really made an impression on gira, they really mustve been something. wftd play slow, melncholy post rock, all the instruments falling in unison the the downbeat of a drummer who sounds very tired. i wish i could describe this better, but i really cant. this is incredible, distant, softly strummed guitars rise to a subtle climax, then gently fall asleep and crack their heads on the pavement. highly recommended for fans of later era swans, angels of light, tribes of neurot, godspeedyoublackemperor!, tarentel, and other bands on the temporary residence and kranky labels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now one of my all time favorite albums..., July 28, 2003
This review is from: Calm Hades Float (Audio CD)
Windsor for the Derby didn't amaze me too, too much when I heard the most recent disc, 'Emotional Rescue LP,' but when I found out that their older records were recorded and produced and performed with Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid) I had to look into it some more. 'Calm Hades Float,' is one of the best post rock / indie rock / experimental discs out there. I love it. I think it would fit best with fans of Bedhead, Stars of the Lid, Labradford, Swans, Angels of Light .... this stuff is incredible. Get out there and grab this wonderful album.

While never achieving any sort of material I felt this band has garnered in reputation, this album does at it's best accentuate the band's better assets in displaying their mogwai-esque habits. Although this band was undoubtedly influential to help pioneer this sound to the later generation of post-rock setups, Windsor always seemed to loose track of the prize when developing their themes, falling to the usual traps of becoming a slave to environment at the expense of the song.
