I read as much of the book on Amazon.com before purchasing and, by practicing descriptive praise and reflective listening, noticed immediate improvement in how my children and I relate. I purchased the book from Amazon UK and consider it a terrific investment. The detail and examples are essential to fleshing out the concepts and optimizing impact. I have three daughters (4, 6 and 9). Before reading the book, I would typically repeat myself several times and eventually yell when my children misbehaved. The six steps described in the "never ask twice" chapter work like magic. I am no longer the father who yells. As a bonus, the basic principles, which are based on respectful encouragement and cooperation, are helpful in adult personal and professional relationships as well.

This book details the parenting strategies that I've been looking for for years! I'm practicing "descriptive praise" with my two daughters now, and I am finding that it is more difficult than I expected to break the habit of over-the-top, generalized praising (i.e., "great job, fantastic!") and being very specific about what my kids are doing right. When I use "descriptive praise," though, it means so much more to them!

I am going to order "calmer, happier music practice" as soon as I can. I wish it were available as a book as well as a CD!

My kids are 10 and 15 now, and while I wish I had found this book earlier, these techniques are still very effective with them. Thank you so much for your invaluable insight!

There is no punishment, shaming or bullying as is the case with many parenting books. The examples of how kids might react to the techniques are very realistic (grousing, eye-rolling, sassing) so the author doesn't sugar-coat, but she does guide the parent on how to respond in a way that is respectful and dignified to both parent and child.
I see how it's possible to use the techniques in a cold, domineering way and maybe it's possible to do that with any technique. After some thought and experimentation, I was able to adapt the techniques to my own style where I strive for warmth, authenticity and kindness while still being firm about standards of behavior. For example, part of my style is to avoid "rules" to be mindlessly followed, but rather we have expectations, values and principles such as finding solutions that work for everybody, or making sure we clean up after ourselves, or safety is paramount.
One thing she doesn't tackle in this book or even provide references for is how to keep your own reactivity in check. But, that's okay because there are many other books that contain advice about that.
This isn't the one and only book you should have about parenting, but it should be part of your top 20 to round out your toolbox on how to parent in a gentle, affectionate way toward raising cooperative, independent kids.

This latest offering from Noel Janis-Norton brings the Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting program into accessible, practical reach of anyone raising or teaching young children. The five techniques will transform a classroom or home within weeks, if not days. The power of pointing out the positive with a specific description (rather than the un-helpful "good job" that one hears so often) is incredible. Even very young children learn self-control when they avoid a "no-no" and are told, "You didn't touch the dishwasher." Wow - what a great technique.

Calmer, Easier, Happier Parenting: Five Strategies That End the Daily Battles and Get Kids to Listen the First Time

I taught young children for years and used the Prepare for Success technique every day. I had a calm home day care day and could take five children under the age of four out into the community with confidence, knowing that they knew how to behave and, most importantly, enjoyed being cooperative.

I can't say enough good things about this book or these techniques. My advice - purchase this book and you won't be sorry. Oh - wait, you'll be sorry if you don't practice the techniques after you read the book.

definitely a worthwhile read. I also bought the CD's to reinforce the instructions which I listen to while commuting. The information is something I expect to repeat listening to so I avoid short cutting the recommendations.

worked with my 11 and 13 year old who are both at that very moody stage of their teen years :) It is also the first book that my husband was able to put into practice without much trouble. A must read for every parent, teacher (I am a teacher), caregiver, and grandparent!

This book is so awesome and the techniques are easy to implement into daily life. After only a day of descriptive my praise I was speechless when I told my son no to something and he didn't argue with me, before he always argued with me...about everything! Too many great points to list about this book, great read. Get it!!!

This book offers a complete parenting approach with lots of specific examples. Some of the techniques are very effective, some of them feel unwieldy to use (I cringed at the reflective listening section with memories of my parents using that technique). It has a lot of excellent ideas. I give 4 stars instead of 5 because it is so freaking l-o-n-g. All of the method descriptions are far too dense and could be explained using about a quarter of the words. The length is a big drawback for a parenting book. Parents' time is incredibly limited and the book wastes it while purporting to help.
